CEL is probably from the lack of rear O2 sensors

Check engine light (CEL). From what I've read the exhaust has a tendency to pop if its under 3". Its most likely throwing the code due to O2 sensors. Go to auto zone and get it pulled. In any even you definitely need to get a tune on it since you now have a full exhaust and CAI.

I just installed a Magnaflow Catback on my car and it is doing the same thing except i do not have an H or X pipe and it seemed to rob a lot of low end torque and HP. Does ok up top but pops a lot after letting off from high rpms? Guy said an H or X pipe would help this. Does that sound right?

Sorry not trying to highjac your thread just a question?

No an X nor H will not alleviate the popping. Like I said before the only setups I've seen/heard that don't pop are the full 3" setups. The 2 1/2 is restrictive with the bigger cube motor the GTs and GXPs have.

No the popping isn't. But you seriously need to get a tune on that thing if you're still on the stock tune w/ full exhaust and CAI. To put it into perspective, people usually tune after CAI and once again after LT's, or after both are installed @ the same time. That's your best bet at this point.

Is the popping from the exhaust sound or from the engine?

Describe the popping

the popping is from the motor and they are telling me the dyno will fix it becouse of the air/fuel problem

Well by saying a dyno, I am guessing you mean a dyno tune....

First, Get CEL code it might just be the rear O2s (which won't affect performance), or there could be multiple codes indicating other issues.

Second, Check for mechanical problems like Vacuum leak, melted plug wires both of which are easy to do with header/air intake installs.

Third, Get a "scan" to see what's happening, are your fuel trims reasonable? Any misfires noted?

I wouldn't go WOT until you get it figured out.

I don't see how an air/fuel ratio problem would cause that--the stock tune can reasonably compensate for headers and an intake.

Have you checked for any exhaust leaks? All G8s I hear, outside of the guys with FULL 3" exhaust, no cats, have the "popcorn" sound when climbing revs a bit and really noticeable when letting off the throttle.

FWIW, I just had a customer bring me his G8 that was recently built/tuned by another shop, and it was doing this "popping" sound especially during shifts @ WOT. With about 30 minutes of street tuning, I had the popping tuned out of it. This comes from either no tune at all, or just a dyno tune. Dyno tuning G8's aren't going to get what you need done in the PCM to get the full potential out of the car, PERIOD. Timing/air/fuel adjustments need to be done on the road when it's under a full load.

Good to know Damian. I had always heard it was due the smaller sizes of exhausts, etc. Good thing my tuner does full street tuning! What is the pinpointing reason behind this? Dumping fuel under certain load conditions?
