To get an 04 Goat in the mid 12's?
#22
I think the short answer is there is no easy (read: cheap) way to get an 04 in the mid 12's.
Just need routine bolt ons & a good tune. That's not too bad cost wise but still a couple thousand. All done if you don't go to the strip.....
A full weight GTO with average driver is pushing 3900. It's relatively simple to get 375+whp out of the LS1 but then the issues travel down the driveline. You might get it a few times, then your clutch, driveshaft, stubs will fail. Get Nittos and they may fail the same day.

I ran 12.5 with a GT2-3 cam, Dynatech long tubes with cats, SLP pulley, Speed Inc CAI, 160 t-stat, Nitto DR's, and a tune. 368/360 is what it dynoed. You don't need to go crazy with dumping the clutch to launch either. I usually brought it out around 15-1800. Short times were usually 1.9x.
You can get there without a cam, just need a couple more bolt ons than I had. Obviously, you can go a bit faster than mine did at that time with a bigger cam than the GT2-3. That could be considered almost stock

Wow....you're severely underestimate this car. With headers and a tune I ran a 13.2 @ 109 with a 2.31 60 ft. I changed my clutch after 65K almost with hundreds of trips down the drag strip (I was able to eventually cut a 1.8 60 ft, but had to back out of the run) My driveshaft, stubs, (ls7 clutch) it all doing fine with over 400 to the wheels and 90K miles.
You lasted b/c you walked it out of the hole. Big difference.

Gears for this car aren't THAT bad.....you could do gears and rebuild the stock posi for under 1K. Granted thats like 3X what an Fbody costs but its a good upgrade.
These cars take very little to get in the mid 12's. You won't need all those bolt-ons like someone said above. Tires, gears, headers, tune....that should be about what it takes.

1.8-1.9 60 fts on stock tires is "walking it out of the hole"??? Wow....I haven't bolted up drag slicks, but still I'm not being a slouch either.

Yeah and gears are 687.00 and rebuilding the stock posi is about 200 bucks if you get the posi spring tuning kit and the master install kit. All from difftechnics.

i have 399rwhp and 389rwtq on my 04 as of now. and done with 3 boltons. i am still on the stock clutch after 20,000 miles of very rough driveing. street and strip. as of now it is going to need to be changed. as for the suspension i am still on the stock settup. no drag bags, just the stock shocks and springs, stock settup on the irs and axles. and with the stock clutch slipping and a 192 60' and smokeing the clutch on every shift i still turned a 12.70 at 109. all i have is a 04 with the complete stock car except for the engine haveing 3 boltons put on. and i will replace only when it brakes, because mine is still holding up!!! all i am saying is do not be afraid of the stock parts as they are tougher than most think.
