To get an 04 Goat in the mid 12's?
My buddy has a basically stock 04 M6 goat, and was wondering what it would take to get her into the 12.50 range, at full weight.
I recommended gears....then we looked them up and I called around at work (I work at a gear shop) and that idea was kinda out of the questions.
He's getting ready to do some Long Tubes and cut out's but what else does it take? I'm kinda curious to know.

- A Good Driver - Stick is hard to get out of the hole with the IRS
- A Good Tire
- A set of Drag Bags
- A set of LTs
- A set of ***** to launch the thing at 5K
Done
After that you might need a new clutch

Gears for this car aren't THAT bad.....you could do gears and rebuild the stock posi for under 1K. Granted thats like 3X what an Fbody costs but its a good upgrade.
These cars take very little to get in the mid 12's. You won't need all those bolt-ons like someone said above. Tires, gears, headers, tune....that should be about what it takes.

yes, gears are F'in retarded for the GTO.
I bought a used set of 3.73's for $400. Otherwise I would not have them.....$1K for rear gears and a bearing kit is b.s. No body competes in the market is the problem.
if you find a set of used 3.91's pop up, go for it. Otherwise a cheap nitrous kit will far outweight the gains from a set of gears IMO

bolt-ons and a tune is pretty much it, but i would look into a better clutch because the stock clutch doesn't last to long racing, the driver mod is always helpful to. i've gone 12.6 with bolt-ons and a cam with a stall and i was babying the thing out the hole.

Drag bags are a must esp for m6 with the IRS! When I had headers and a cai on my 04 m6 I ran a 12.9 with a 1.9/2.0 60ft and that could have been faster if the 60ft was down.
Recently I ran a 12.6 with Headers catless Cai and Cam on stock sliping clutch with a 2.0 60 =( got a PP85mm Tb and a new clutch on and gonna see what she really does.
Also I do not powershift. I shift as fast as possible without powershifting. I have seen 04's with only Cai do a 12.9 powershifting the whole time ..just not my style as the guy needed a new tranny not too long after
My times with mods are also listed in my sig (note the last time I ran I was on stock clutch and stock TB and could only launch at 4k and im still on the stock gears bc it's my daily driver and i need my 25mpg highway =)

I think the short answer is there is no easy (read: cheap) way to get an 04 in the mid 12's.
Just need routine bolt ons & a good tune. That's not too bad cost wise but still a couple thousand. All done if you don't go to the strip.....
A full weight GTO with average driver is pushing 3900. It's relatively simple to get 375+whp out of the LS1 but then the issues travel down the driveline. You might get it a few times, then your clutch, driveshaft, stubs will fail. Get Nittos and they may fail the same day.
