I want to know the M6. I think you should go to the keymaker expert. Try to have taxi first.

that wont work, believe me i know. This has happened to me 3 times, you need a new cylinder switch, costs $50 or $60 from the dealership. Only thing is, to get the cylinder out you have to be able to turn the key. Take it apart as much u can, and spray some wd40 in the key hole, and the rear where the switch is, take it out. its 2 bolts, you will need an allen wrench for. take that off, and spray wd40 and try wiggling it around. If that doesnt work, take it to the dealership if you have warranty, if not, well me personally, i had to drill the others out.

There's a how-to on LS1GTO.com that shows how to remove and repair the lock cylinder. Doesn't seem that difficult based on the write up. Do a search over there.

+1, theres an awesome write-up on ls1gto, but thats only if you can turn the key, in order to stick a small allen wrench in that hole to release the cylinder, you have to be able to turn the key.

One of the guys there said one of the mechanics did this on their lounge table with a set of twizers. I don't think I'm going to pay that much when the part cost $60.00. Is there anywhere I can look up how to do this?
dont pay that! the new cylinder is about $30 or so and you can install it yourself. you dont need the internal tumblers. Just the housing is the issue

The old style housing is # 92172018
The new updated housing with stronger metal is # 92234035

I just went ahead and cleaned up the original housing with a dremal myself.

Good luck.

Its an easy fix, just had to do it myself 2weeks ago. just take your time an if it doesn't want to go back in when reinstalling it, make sure the column lock isn't catching. Good luck.

Default Recall

I recently had to have my ignition lock cylinder replaced due to the issue most people have, where one day when inserting the key into the ignition, the key simply will not turn, resulting in having my car towed to the dealer and $480 later, my car was fixed. I contacted GM about this issue and they claim I was the first GTO owner to complain of this issue or have this problem. I recommend that everyone with this issue contact the district manager at GM. His name and contact info are listed below. The mroe of us that report this issue, the more likely GM will issue a recall.

God you seriously got gouged for 480?? You should have been a member and got some advice before you went and spent that much money. It's a VERY common problem so i dont know what line of crap GM was trying to feed you.

In the future if you have any issues with the car get on here first and post up. It's usually something that one of us has experienced first hand. Don't go straight to the stealership.

Does this seem to only be an '05-'06 thing? Or an A4 or M6 thing? Or can it happen to any Goat?

I have an 04 a4 and had one hell of a time with it as well. Put some of that dusty lubricant stuff (forgot what it was actually called... think it was what pencil lead is made otu of now)... has worked for months flawlessly. crossing my fingers.

^^^your talking about liquid graphite. Anywho do the mod to the ignition cylinder and as a back up plan every couple months spray liquid graphite in there. You should have no problems afterwards.

After trying for about an hour to get my key to turn, I got out a hammer and while trying to turn the key I tapped the end of it with the hammer and the key turned. Just had to give it a little tap.
