This was probably not the first time this has happened to you. This is common and when you start noticing the signs, you should get right to fixing it, but once it's locked up like it is, then you're kinda SOL.

It was probably happening to the previous owner. It will get worse as the weather heats up. Try and refrain from parking in direct sunlight.

I just had this happen to me on my 06 a few weeks ago. On LS1gto under the knowledgebase there is an article about "fixing" the ignition cylinder.

My key would not turn at all which is required to remove the cylinder and work on it. I was finally able to get it to move by removing the plastics and tapping the bottom of the cylinder housing as I turned on the key. I then removed and disassembled the cylinder and fixed the step/ledge where the pin sits in the back of the assembly. It's been smooth as silk since then.

Do this.

Also put your car in neutral before trying to start it.

I have the same problem my key won't turn unless I jiggle the key while it is in the ignition, has there been alot of problems with this? I went to the dealer and they had 5 ignition cylinders in stock. I'm going to pick up the new cylinder tomorrow and set the tumblers to fit my key myself since the dealer wants $350.00 to do it. One of the guys there said one of the mechanics did this on their lounge table with a set of twizers. I don't think I'm going to pay that much when the part cost $60.00. Is there anywhere I can look up how to do this?

I'm not certain that a new cylinder will actually fix your problem. I don't believe there is any revision to the cylinders thus it may just happen again. Best thing to do is modify your current one since the key still works.

There are detailed threads on ls1gto.com for this problem. I had this exact thing happen on my 06 gto. You HAVE to take vice grips to turn the key to the on position for sure unless you wanna pay a dealership. Once you have the key in the forward position and steering wheel unlocked you need to get the lock cylinder out of the steering column. Long story short, you need a dremel tool to smooth out a portion of the inside of the metal lock cylinder, where a little pin gets stuck while turning your key. There are a few great threads on the gto site and a there are pictures and instructions on how to do this without paying hundreds of dollars.

^ I believe there was one in the knowledgebase that I followed to fix mine. I work in CNC machine shop and was able to fine a .125 ball end mill that i chucked up in a dremel. That was probably the perfect tool to do the mod with. It's been smooth as silk ever since.
