help with aftermarket cam
i got a 04 GTO, mods are K&N cold air intake, BBK 80mm Throttle Body, BBk SSI Intake Manifold, SLP Full Lenght Headers, and SLP Loud Mouth Exhaust, looking to do a nice cam, dont want to do a cam that requires me to have to build the heads up, unless i have too, looking more for a little bit bigger then stock, something that has a nice idle, but has some power threw the rpms, any ideas, keep in mind, my 3 year old sone rides in the car with me too, lol, thanks.

I have a 220/220 .551/.551 Comp cam on a 114 lsa. I am looking to get something bigger but this car makes great power and drives and idles very close to stock. I believe this would be your cam, seeing as your son rides in the car and you don't want a really choppy idle. $300 bucks shipped. Still got the box and everything just lmk.

ok, i was looking at a Mega Death 244/242 112 LSA cam, is that a to big of a choppy cam? And would I have to build up the heads? My goal horse power is 400-425 at the wheels. Its going to be a street car and maybe see the drag strip a couple time a year. but also is goping to be a daily driver during the summer.

I had the Thunder Racing 224 (224/224, .563/.563 ) with 114 LSA for several years until I recently upgraded to a bigger cam. It was a really nice smooth cam that made great power and torque. You will need better valve springs and should also get hardened pushrods. Thunder Racing also has a split pattern 224/227 that if I had it to do over, I would of got instead. I know you said you hoped to keep the stock heads, but you could pick up a pair of used low mileage 243 heads (LS2/LS6) for maybe $400. That along with a modest cam would wake up your car big time and put a huge grin on your face.
EDIT: I posted before I saw your last post. LOL, you went from one extreme to the other. Yeah, the Megadeath is way too big (in my opinion). Of course, a few others might disagree. If you are looking for something in the middle (in between small and huge), then the Texas Speed 228R or Torquer v2 works well with the LS1.

To hit 400-425 HP with a 04 GTO you're gonna have to at least get rid of your 241s and get a pair of 243s and have them ported especially if you want a mild cam.
The megadeath is WAY too big for what you're asking for. I would recommend the TSP 224r or even the TSP 228r cam, both at a 114 LSA.
Are you an auto? If so you'll need a new stall to go with the cam (on top of the springs, pushrods, retainers, etc..)

ok so if i do 243s heads ported, TSP 228r cam and a LS6 Intake manifold a long with my SLP LTs and Loud mouth exhaust and bbk throttle body, and a good tune, wut do u think i would be making horse power wise? And if i do the 228r cam will i have to upgrade my valve springs, retainers and push rods?
Guess i jus need someone to help me get to 425hp, lol. have only owned the car for six months, and looking to be able to crush my buddys RSX with 13lbs of boost, pushing 375hp to the wheels, he pulls on me in his 3rd gear about 1 1/2 car lenghts, i real him in to about a 1/2 a car then the race is over, just need the little extra power to put him down, so any help i would greatly help, thanks.
and i am a manule trans.

With the ported heads, LS6 intake, and TSP 228r cam you will defiantly hit your power goals.
Yes you will need to get new springs, pushrods, retainers, etc..
Here is a link to a great vendor and great package that has every single thing you'll need except the intake.
They also sell the LS6 intake but on a different page
http://texas-speed.com/shop/item.asp
When picking stuff out make sure you add the Comp beehive springs, pick a 114 LSA and 7.4" pushrods.
How many miles are on your car? A lot? If not then you don't need the timing chain or oil pump.
One more thing you'll have to add to that package is a set of new head gaskets. Just get the .51" (pretty sure that's the stock thickness) to keep stock compression and stock pushrod length.

The LS6 intake manifold is what originally came on the 04 GTO in case you didn't know. I generally tell people the BBK intake manifold is not much of a gain over the stock one, but I don't know about spending a lot to go back to the LS6 one if you already have the BBK and no longer have the stock one. Maybe try your current intake and see how it does with the heads and cam. I bet there isn't much difference between the two.
Ported 243 heads and a 228R cam along with your current mods will definitely put you over 400 hp. I made less than 380 hp with full bolt-ons and a TR224 cam, but I also had a A4 with a higher stall converter. You M6 guys always make more on the dyno, but us A4 guys do better at the track.
When I had my cam installed, I swapped in the beefier and better LS2 timing chain (the older style LS1 chain is wimpy). If you are over 60k to 75k miles, you might consider a new oil pump too. When you order the bolt and gasket kit, make sure you know which head bolts to get. The early style LS1 uses long and short bolts. If you have a May of 2004 build or later, you might have the LS2 style bolts which are all the same length.
You might consider the 112 LSA with a 228R cam. It will give you a slightly rougher idle (more lope), but with a M6 it moves the power range up a bit which helps. Sounds meaner too. If you are worried about having a smooth idle, then 114 LSA is the way to go.

Here is my most recent dyno video when I made 430 hp and 408 tq. At the end of the video is a short clip from the tailpipe where you can hear what a 112 LSA sounds like at idle (I have a Thunder Racing 230/236 cam). I currently have a 3200 rpm stall. If I had a M6, I probably would of put down 450-460 hp.

I just made 411/385 with the following=stock 243 heads, jba shorties and catless mids,85mm maf, typhoon intake and 85 tb,svede intake, predator 224/231 577/588 114 cam and a CPS dyno tune. So you're still going to need a similar size cam and 243 heads.

BBK 85mm Throttle Body
SLP Long Tube Headers w/ catless mids (if that sounds right)
SLP Loud Mouth Exhaust System
What I orded Today:
Texas Speed 228r Cam w/ 112 LSA
Comp Cams Single Beehive Springs
Texas Speed Hardend Chromoly Pushrods (7.4 in Lenght)
243s Heads (Ported)
LS6 Intake Manifold (ported to match Port on heads & the 85mm Throttle Body if needed)
SLP Oil Pump (car has 56k on it, better to be safe then sorry)
LS6 Timing Chain
What do you guys think? Think ill hit my 425 mark wih this?
Wut else i need to no:

2) if you bought the ls6 intake from TSp you just wasted 200 bucks(should have bough one used for 300
3)keep your stock rockers, aftermarkets are expensive and give you very little gain

Yes you should hit 425 with those and a solid tune, BUT you didnt need the ls6 IM, and as stated above return the LS6 chain and buy an LS2 chain.
And your car came stock with an LS6 IM so if you still have your stock one somewhere thats an LS6 lol
But good call with the 228r cam.
