Default Clutch Install

I just ordered my new clutch and would like to know if any of you have any advice, suggestions, tips, and ticks as to doing the install with headers. I was told that i will most likely have to remove the right side header to get the bellhousing off the motor.

nope. You wont. Not sure who told you that, but definitely leave them on.

I've done this....too many times, by myself....on jackstands in my garage. Nothing crazy about it.

-Jack up the car, support with 4 GOOD jackstands.
-Unbolt your exhaust. (you might not have to completely undo it on your car though)

-Before removing the DS, make a witness mark so you can put it back in the same way.
Some say this matters, other say it doesnt.

-Unbolt the DS from the rear end. For this, if you cant find the special socket (E18 I think its called) you can use a 6side 14mm. I used a 1/2" drive because those bolts are on there tight. 3 bolts here.

-Unbolt the DS center support. (2) 13mm bolts.
-Pull out DS. Its easy if you bend it at the ujoint in the middle, push it as far as you can into the tranny, and wriggle it out from the rear end.

-Remove the drain plug from the tranny and let it drain....have a beer.

-Suck out all the hydraulic fluid from your reservoir and unhook the line from the master into the hardline on the trans.

-Unhook the rest of the electrical connections from the trans. Should be (1) on the right side, and (2) on the left.

-Unhook your REAR 02 sensors.

-Remove the (4) 16mm bolts for the transmission crossmember. Support it with a jack, then SLOWLY lower it after its unbolted.

-There will be (8) bolts from the trans to the bellhousing. Either 13mm or 15mm....They are the same bolt as the Bellhousing-->Motor, just a different sized head.

-Once its unbolted, you can lay under it (head towards the rear end), with your knees under it, and wriggle it out onto your lap. Spread your legs, slowly put it on the floor, and drag it out of the way.

-Next, unbolt the Bellhousing. Again, (8) bolts, either 13mm or 15mm.

-Unbolt the pressure plate from the flywheel. Should be (6) 13mm bolts. Dont drop it on your face!

-Unbolt the flywheel from the crank. (6) 15mm bolts here.

**********IF YOU ARE CHANGING OUT THE PILOT BEARING***********

Get the proper tool!!!!!

DO NOT USE THE GREASE METHOD, tp method, whatever other **** you can pack in there to pop the pilot bearing out. In the LS Motors there is a Freeze plug in the back of the crank and you WILL push it in.

-Replace the pilot bearing.

Then do the steps backwards to put it all together!

-Flywheel (after you replace the pilot bearing)...use loctite here
First pass - 15ftlbs
2nd pass - 37ftlbs
3rd pass - 74ftlbs

-Pressure plate. When you do this, put your disc between the flywheel and pressure plate and use your clutch alignment tool. As you're torquing down the PP keep checking to make sure the alignment tool slides all the way in and out easy, otherwise the trans will be a bitch to put back in. Loctite here.

1st pass - 20ftlbs
2nd pass - 40ftlbs
3rd pass - 52ftlbs

-Bolt your bellhousing back up. Loctite here
37ftlbs

Before putting your trans back in, check out (read replace) the slave cylinder (2) 8mm bolts, throwout bearing, and add a speedbleeder.

-Slide in your tranny and bolt back up.....Loctite here
37ftlbs

The easiest way I've found to get the trans back up, with or without help, is pretty much the opposite way you took it out. With your head toward the front of the car, get the tranny into your lap, with the very front about to where your chest is. Get your knees under the crossmember and lift. Slide it in....depending on how lucky you are....it may go right in, or you might fight with it. I've had times where I literally picked it up and it slid RIGHT in. 30 seconds tops....other times....fought for an hour.

-Get the jack, lift the trans back up and bolt up the crossmember. (4) 16mm bolts.

-Insert the DS, and bolt it back up to the rear end. (3) "14mm" bolts.

-Bolt up center support on the DS (2) 13mm bolts.

-Bolt your exhaust back up.

-Bleed, bleed, bleed

-Fill the tranny back up with fluid (this is an important step)

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL YOUR TOOLS BEFORE STARTING THE CAR.

Hopefully :fingerscrossed: enjoy!

A Harbor Freight tranny jack is your friend. They're about $80 and worth every penny.
