95% of the people (especially not in the car world) talk crack Hp.. And he is correct in his statement.
The other 5% (especially people in the car world) talk Rwhp..
Just because he is talking crank and you are talking Rw (dyno) doesn't make him wrong and you right.. In that aspect, why are you not wrong and he is right?
Maybe you should inform him of this.. Maybe he could learn something.
Most people that don't know about cars, talk **** like this.. The ones that are informed usually don't because they know that 600Rwhp in todays world, isn't too much to brag about.. Even on the street. There is ALWAYS someone to put you in your place.... And it is usually someone with less cubes/smaller power adder/more weight/etc..

It most definitely is stout.. But not uncommon anymore for a street car.
If you have a group of cars hanging out, say 20 people... And 4 are around the 550-650rw are, and 2 in the 700+ club... The rest being from 300-45rw... It's safe to say you shouldn't be too cocky now a days with 500rwhp, plenty of other people to set you in your place.
Isn't to say you wouod bitch slap 95% of the cars you run into.

No matter what having a ride thats putting down that kind of power is pretty rare imo there arent alot of 600rwhp street cars running around.
Now if you are big on ls1tech and you go into the street racing kill section, ya it sort of makes a car like that seem a bit more common.. in reality your lucky to see any at all.

heck I'd be happy with 400.. but it aint happening.
it's true though with direct injection, factory boost, etc. that stock power numbers are looking better than ever on the production side. We have a lot of competition out of the box these days from the 30 something with more money than time that wants to buy himself a status symbol.
for the majority of drivers however.. having 300-400whp doesn't matter that much to them AND they're pulling 4-5-6000 pounds around with it anyway.

Ive tried telling the kid that he is half way right but he just thinks since he has a GTO he can race an beat anything!!! So once i get my full tune im gonna put him in his place.

He might not be the fastest car on the road, but he does have SOME right to brag.
seems a lot of "kids" these days aren't into american muscle anymore.
He sees a few taillights in his "I can beat anything" races and maybe he'll come around and learn a few things he can carry with him in the future.
that's what hotrodding is about right? (maybe I should listen to my own words.. )

One has a C5z with a vortec on it.. Makes just north of 550Rwhp.
One is installing H/C on his C6z.. He is shooting for 615Rwhp or so.
One has a Whipple Cobra.. 630Rwhp.
One *had a turbo trans am, 550Rwhp, and has a H/C C5z, 455Rwhp.
I could go on... Those are 4 of my closest buddies (which we all hang out together so if you were in our town there is a GOOD chance on a friday or satuday night you will run into one of us). I know of many more in my SMALL town... Now, if we move this to Chattanooga/Murfreesboro areas (within 45 minutes on me).. There are PLENTY of 600Rwhp cars running around and very common to have 3-5 750Rwhp-ish cars running around on a Friday-Saturday night. And yes, all these guys meet up and branch out through the night... So running into one in town wouldn't be far fetched by ANY means.
I'm not trying to pass it off like that is a normal street car... But for street cars 600Rwhp is in the mid-high of the food chain, 700+ is top, 500 is mid, 400 is bottom... Anything under that and there are bone stock sedans that can walk you for under 50K$.
You got to think... A decent cam only ls1 with a 175 hit will get you VERY close to 600Rwhp. That is not an unheard of setup or expensive by any means.

LOL well my friend you are obviously on a much higher scale in life than the majority of us on this site.
I guess it depends on where you live whether a 600rwhp car is considered "not uncommon". Most of the setups that you mentioned are at least $30,000+ between the price of the car and mods ect. But it sounds like you would consider that cheap or inexpensive. Just because you and your friends can walk lambo's and vipers doesn't mean that kind of car is more common.
