Yea, after looking at that document and thinking of everything I don't think it should be that bad. But also, that list didnt have a new crossmember and driveshaft listed. Surely they arent the same for the A4 and M6.. by the way thanks for the hep on here guys!

Ahh yes, the crossmember, it needs changed to the A4 style and I believe that we just re-used my M6 driveshaft and it fit. Hell, it could of had an A4 driveshaft in it because I swapped out the differential from an 05 GTO and had to swap the driveshaft as well because of the difference in size and bolt spacing on the yolks.

This is still such a crazy debate in my head. After doing all of this research and with all of these opinions and experiences, I feel like Im still in square one! I found a wrecked chevy pickup with a 4L80E, guy said he would give me the transmission for $100! (Granted it's 100% stock) However, a buddy has a GTO I could buy that is in immaculate shape (2005) and for a steal.. I have, however, come to the conclusion that should I ever decide to take out a 2nd mortgage and make my car a monster, a 4L60E just wont cut it. So, now its between buying the 05 GTO with 40k on it, doing some part swap and going to town, or making this 4L80E fit in my car after I dump some money in this old 80. Opinions, AGAIN?

I have been wanting to go auto too. have done a lot of research. what i'm thinking is a built 4l60 with a rossler little black box controller to avoid all the electronic compatibility issues. You can do this with a 4l80 as well but will need a driveshaft, etc. most ratchet shifter have 4spd gates or you could use the stock auto shifter.
With the little black box controlloer, the tranny will be full time manual, but I'm used to that with C4's and don't worry about it. I think it's more fun to drive than full auto. Torque converter lock-up will be switch activated.
Benefit of the 4l60 is cost and ease of physical swap as you can use your 6pd driveshaft. I bought an auto. tranny crossmember on ebay for $30.
I ran 11.10's on my 02 TA with a stock 4l60 and FTI converter for years with no trouble. Kept my shift points at 6000rpm and had my nitorus kit set-up to not spray through the shifts. I think the tranny's are better than they get credit for.
I don't drive the car much and would like to track it a few times a month and much, much prefer the auto for the track. A lot of the auto guys are running pretty strong on the stock axles and stubs as well.
In my opinion the GTO is too heavy and has a poor overall design for a dedicated drag car. The aftermarket parts are very expensive and why start with an IRS car instead of an F-body. But I think they can be made into a great street/strip car that can run 11.0-11.50 reliably without breaking the bank. Praise to all the manual tranny guys that do it, but the auto is much much easier. I enjoy occasional bracket racing as well.

With that being said, if the total cost is more than $2800 for the trans, converter and other necessities I would look at doing the 4l80 with a shift kit. That with the driveshaft, crossmember, and other simple stuff should be less than $2800 if you used a good, used stock 4l80e.
Seems like the performabilt lvl 2 4l60's are holding up, but thats just looking through the threads.

look up the swap that "toms2005gto" did m6 to 4l80, ls1gto forum. looks like it came from the factory that way. Don Dixon is still running his built 4l60 in his 9.60 procharged gto, still sees street duty.

Good thing we all don't have the same opinion, eh? That would be terribly boring.

Did this swap ever get done? I have a 2006 A4 GTO and am looking to swap into an M6. I have a shop here in TX that can do the complete swap between the two cars with no issues.
PM me if interested.
