4" CAI users come in

4" CAI users come in
My K&N that came with the car fits like crap and I want an upgrade. I would like to run the SNL kit with the upgraded IAT sensor relocated to the filter, along with an LPE heatshield. For those who have the SNL kit, how do you like it? And would it be easier to fab up my own CAI?

Guess I should have rephrased, an SNL style will not be that much. Even actual SNLs go for 150 minus the MAF. The parts to make everything are around $150 not including the IAT sensor and MAF. I have Silicon couplers and clamps, and I just found an old AEM 4 inch pipe at work I can cut up to make fit. So all I would be buying is the MAF, a new air filter and a new IAT sensor.

Just saying that after you buy all that stuff, and a new MAF and a new IAT sensor and the LPE heatshield you're going to be getting close to what an OTR intake costs and still be drawing in hot air.
Now if the whole shebang cost say 1/3 of the svede I guess that would be a good amount of $$$ savings for having slightly less power/higher IATs. But if you're going to spend close to as much money as a new superior intake but for the stock style intake well I just don't think is cost effective.
But it's your call as to which you get.

If you're doing a 4" pipe you'd be best off running it through a hole in the fender to right in front of the wheel. A "shield" may stop bullets but it doesn't give a source of cool air. When I made a 4" pipe intake years ago I ran it through the fender, built a scoop under the car and then shielded off the radiator discharge under the car on that side as it would suck in hot air blowing out. It gave decent results but not quite what the OTR did.

i've looked at what it would take to make my own too and depending on which 100mm maf you use you can come in under their price. the difference wasn't that substantial when you have to source every single part for it at one time.

get 100mm MAF and wait for a svede. i have the SNL intake and i am getting IAT of like 128* so i am waiting for a svede to peek up somewhere that i can snag it and get some cooler IAT's + ram air :-)

I just now saw this thread. I've heard the haters tell me the same thing, but with a decent heatshield a 100mm MAF and 4" intake does work. My 04 GTO gained 23hp and 18tq over a LPE CAI with just the 100mm MAF, 4" intake, and tune (the MAF requires a retune). You don't need a new IAT with the 04 GTO, the stock one can be relocated no problem. Since I took these pics, I've insulated the shield which helped even more. Most of the air enters from the hole in the front which is not affected by the rad. The shield seals well against the hood, there is a nice indentation in the hood insulation. IATs are only a few degrees over ambient. This thing works.

But after the price of the tubing, filter, heatshield and new MAF you are getting awfully close to an OTR intake that would be better.
If you could build that intake for $2-300 less than a svede, then yeah it would make sense especially financially. But dropping $400 on a stock style 90* bend intake when a svede can be had for just as much I think is pointless.

Little known fact we actually used the SNL MAF adapter with the Svede intake. Results were fine. Any time you can increase from the 3.5 to 4 inch intake you are going to see a gain. Mine was an early prototype of both the MAF adapter and the intake. Not sure where they went with the fitment. You can actually buy rubber instead of silicon and aluminized steel instead of aluminum and probably do the whole intake tube for less than $50. MAF and Adapter and harnesses will still run a couple hundred.
