I think it's a set to come on at a predetermined mileage. To turn it off, put the key in the on position, press the accelerator 3 times and turn in the off position agian. This will reset it.

Gtodoug Has Pretty Much Hit The Nail On The Head. You Can Refer To Section 5-17 In Your Owner's Manual. This Is The First New Car I Actually Sat Down And Read Through The Entire (almost) Manual. The Gto Has Some Very Nice Features Available That Are Explained And Some Good Basic Trouble-shooting Ideas As Well.

Thanx, guess I could have read the manual (RTFM) but figured you guys would be quicker! my car just turned 9700 miles.. so that must be the signal miles to activate this...

This is exactly the same way as the trucks. It's the GM cars like Monte Carlo's, Impala's and others that use the RDS stereo's that you have to reset the oil life monitor through.

It's nothing more than a friendly reminder for those who don't know how to take care of their car. I've usually changed my oil 3 times before the light comes on.

Ya think with todays technology, it would be "smart" enough to know when last oil change was... wouldn't be hard.. maybe a sensor that tells when oil filter was removed, therefore indicating a Oil change....then inturn it could update the computer and stop that message from displaying....(Just a thought)
I quess its designed for those ding bats (or women) who don't change oil regulary.. But 9700 miles geeez poor engine.
I personally change my oil every 2500 miles... especially on H.O or SC Turbo motors
