Default Recessed 05 Grilles are in

I finally got my new grilles installed. Looks a lot better with the 05 hood IMO. It only took me about 2 hrs, most of which I spent trying to locate the "clips" that hold the facia on. I took a couple pics in case anyone was thinking about doing this, and thinks it's too much of a job. It aint!

You have to remove the 3 screws at the top. I marked where the facia was positioned so I could install it in the same place (note the magic marker outline by the screws). Then you remove the 2 screws at the lower front of each fender well. Then pop the 2 clips loose on each side. (pull out on the facia & it should pop free)

If this has been posted before I apologise. I couldn't find a thread.

Am I the only one that liked the 04 grills? Something about the inset I don't like.

I prefer the look of the SAP grills, mostly because it helps break up the 'bubble' of the front end a bit. And it flows well with the 05 hoods with the scoops.

GM Parts Direct is like $225. Dont even Ebay them, your just making someone else money. They come pre-painted a silver color.

I get too much of a GrandPrix/Grandam vibe out of them....It's bad enough no-nothings already mistake us for those cars.

Default Another Vote for Stock Grill

Obviously, it is entirely a matter of taste, but I'm with Alpha, too. I prefer the stock grill with the honeycomb pattern. Just to get a neutral opinion, I showed the inset grill to my wife, and she said, "Ugh, grills should be one piece." Guess that answered my question.

Interestingly, I was reviewing a picture book of 64-67 GTO's. The standard response, e.g., Car & Driver magazine, has been that these were the classically good looking Goats, and the new ones are "plain" or "bland." My wife, who hasn't seen an old one in a while (and likes cars, having put up with me for 25 years), said she prefers the looks of the new ones, like my 2004 Impulse Blue M6. But then, she never much liked driving my 1966 Tempest with the OHC 6 and Hurst shifter (total cost: $300) that got me through law school. BTW, while I dearly love the old ones, too, have you ever noticed how ridiculously long the rear overhangs in the old muscle cars (or just about any mid-size or larger 60s or 70s cars) look to modern eyes?

And we bitch about the weight of the new Goats at 3750 pounds. But I didn't realize until reviewing the book that the older ones weighed just as much, despite not having dual airbags, power seats and everything else, and the other modern gear that we expect from a car now.
