Buying a GTO

Buying a GTO
I'm looking to buy a 2004 GTO M6 w/ 15k miles from a local dodge dealership. I stopped by Saturday and talked to the salesman when he informed me I'd have to come back to test drive it because it had to have service done on it, and it had to be taken to the chevy dealership. He said he thought it was just a battery. After a bit of the run arround on Monday and Tuesday, I stopped by the chevy dealership's service department and they told me the car had a burnt out clutch and pressure plate and would be ready Thursday afternoon. I'm still interested in the car. But I am worried that if the clutch has already died on it that it might have been beat on HARD. What kind of damage could be done to the rear end already?
Like I said I am still very interested in the car but for I want to know what you guys (and gals) think of the situation.
The current asking price is 18,700. Still has remaining 3 yr/36,000 warranty

You are very right, the car could have been driven hard, or it could have been driven by someone who didn't really know how to drive a stick. The latter would be a less serious reason for the clutch being replaced as far as you would be concerned. Approach it with a very critical eye and error on the side of caution if you are on the fence about it. The tricky thing with these cars is that they are such fun to drive and above most expectations in interior quality on the inside, that it is quite easy to make an emotional decision rather than an intelligent one. That isn't necessarily a bad thing all the time, just allow your head to have a fair say in your decision, don't rely totally on your heart (not trying to sound corny, I promise). It has been well noted, the issues with strut rub on the front tires, may see/ask if the dealer made the necessary adjustments to halt this issue (most often taking some of the negative camber out). Other than that, these are VERY solid cars and there are numerous people with far more miles than 15k that have no fit and finish issues, so any creaks or rattles would point towards some level of abuse. Haven't been an owner too long and don't claim to have anywhere near the level of expertise of some of the others, but I figured I'd get the ball rolling. If it turns out the previous owner just rode the clutch all day and that is the only reason it was replaced, then I think $18,700 is a good deal. That is what I paid for my '04 M6 and it had about 8k more miles on it. I wish you the best of luck!

I think you're alright. It's possible the clutch blew because it was modded or the former driver took it to the track, but either way it's got a new clutch...and it's under warranty in case anything else happens down the road. My stock clutch died pretty quickly (at 12K), but nothing else is wrong with the car...just modded and taken to the track with DRs. Just drive it and be nitpicky about how it feels...it's probably fine. Keep us updated!
