GMM Ripshifter Street or Race
I am interested in installing the GMM Ripshifter while my car is garaged for the winter. What is the difference between the street and race versions besides the $30ish more for the street when it still uses the stock shifter shaft.

Depends on whether you do much racing. If you go to the track or race a lot, buy the race version. I have the street version. The street version allows you to re-use the dust boot, which will also make it less noisey. Most of the guys that I know with the race shifter say it is a little noisier than stock, but not all that bad. Mine is no louder than the stocker was.
Either way, you can't go wrong. They are both WAY better than the stock unit.

I have the race version. I don't race much, but the race has a more positive feel then the street. And too, if you are hard on shifts regardless of what you do, you might want to concider the race because over on LS1GTO, there have been quite a few people snapping the stock stick on hard shifts.

I just picked up my car today. Had the GMM race and Kooks LT installed. There is a little more noise from the shifter/tranny, but it is far less noticeable than the additional noise from the LTs.

I have the race version. I personally like it better than the street. The street version reuses the stock upper portion of the original shifter. Imbedded in it is a rubber damper that absorbes sound and vibration. It also makes for a little bit of play when really hammering through the gears. I have installed both types. They are both built well. But, for that more positive feel, the race was for me.

i have the race and i love it. very positive feel...the noise was pretty bad when i first installed it...but after it broke in its pretty quiet now...still makes some noise (aka you can hear the trans doing its thing) but nothing a little radio cant fix id reccomend the race but either will be better than stock. make sure you locktite everything otherwise you'll be back under there again which is always a pain

Now that I've had a couple of weeks to break the new shifter in I can comment further.
The initial roughness of the shifter smoothed out nicely with a little wear. I definitely have more transmission noise coming through, but it's only really noticed at very low RPM(<1500). I'm getting used to the new gate positions, and it definitely makes shifting easier, especially that 4-5 shift.
All in all, I'm very happy with it.
