Default Cam only setup

I am considering putting a cam in my GTO. I dont plan on doing heads and I wanted to go with something pretty aggressive but Still wnat plenty of low end grunt with the stock 3.46's Do you think the HPE "S" cam would be too much for a daily driver GTO. I will install long tube headers and a dyno tune as well. I am pretty much looking for the fastest cam only seup that will still be fast on the street.

I was looking to do the same thing you are wanting to do. I finally came up with the answer. The TR 224/224 with the 112 or 114 LSA would work the best for just cam only. Of course you will have to change your pushrods and valvesprings with any cam more than likely. The 112 LSA will give you more of a choppy idle where the 114 will give you a smoother idle. I believe that Texas racing sells the entire kit cam, pushrods and springs for $549.00. There is one other company that makes a cam almost identical to this cam, but I can't think of their name right now. Of course you will need the car tuned once installed and I was told to install the headers first and then cam. More air/fuel going in, the more exhaust needing to get out. If you have any other questions about this, PM me and I can share what I was told. This cam is a good street cam. If you have an automatic it is preferred that you get a Torque converter along with the cam. Best of luck!!

TR224 will do well, its what I have and I love it. If you are willing to spend a couple extra bucks you may want to get a custom cam spec'ed out for your needs.

I realize that a cam similar to the TR224 is usually considerd the best " street" cam but would a cam like the S cam or magic stick 4 be that much worse down low(below 3000) then say a tr224 or similar. My car is already pretty quick but i'd like it to rip from 2500 to 6800. I got a suggestion from Patrick G and I'm leaning towards what he says. I just dont want to regret my cam choice later by either going too small or too big.

The S cam makes great power I think specs are something like 238/240 112lsa, however its more of a top end cam. I know the LS2's are seeing around 420-430 rwhp with this cam headers udp and intake. You might want to look into the C cam 232/234 112lsa power throughout the whole powerband that cam with mods I just listed and a ls2 is right around 400-415 rwhp. You can get the cam package with rods springs cam and retainer bolt for like 780 shipped from hpe.

I have the C-cam (236/238 601/605) w/ stock heads and just got a "conservative" street tune with 388RWHP. Around 3200 it feels like a f**kn S/C!

damn... I think you just convinced me. That thing sounds sick! What does it peak at and what is your rev limiter set at? What else would you do to make it 400rwhp?

Heh...thanks well I'd have to get a pic up of the dyno sheet. The shop had just relocated and didn't have internet yet to send me an E-copy. It peaked right around 6400. Not sure where he set the rev limit...I really don't go there often LOL.

I missed the "what would you do" part.

I have to be honest here...Cory (tuner) said I might want to look at getting better plug wires or changing the plugs. I said well the plugs are Iridiums, so it can't be them. A couple days later I can't stand it and get a new set of plain NGKTR55's and gap them to .050 (like he suggested). When I took out my old Irridiums and checked the gap I felt like a complete JACK ***! They were all at .060

I noticed a big difference right after I got the new ones in so I wouldn't be supprised if I gained a few more horses just there alone.

Heads is definately the way to go but I just can't afford it right now. I could pull a few more horses with a port/polish TB and underdrive pulley.

I'd go with a comp xer 224/224 112 lsa or a comp xer 228/232 110 lsa.

With a car as heavy as a gto it's all about power under the curve.

I know you're a big fan of the TR224. My only thing is that I wanna run 11's Cam only and I dont know if that cam will get me there? What do you think it would dyno at?

I think i narrowed it down. I know I'm gonna sacrifice some low end torque but I'm willing to do so in the sake of more top end power.

Comp XE-R 232 234 .595 .598 112

FTI 228 232 .610 .600 111 Street Sweeper HT

my only hang up now is the price difference for these 2 cam kits. TSP has the comp kit with PRC springs for 699

FTI has the cam kit at 925 shipped.

Is the FTI cam worth the extra $200?? With that money I can buy an upgraded dual roller timing chain and/or Ported throttle body which will both add strength and more horsepower.

I really love the FTI SSHT cam in my car, you can check out the sound at:

http://idisk.mac.com/walterd-Public

Just did it with some ls6 ported heads so I can't wait to get to the track, feels about the same as the old setup did with the 100 shot.

Have fun,
Walt

I seen a guy run 11's with a 222/226 with a 3.91 rear and full weight 04. Its not all about power its how your set up.. Power helps though because I want moooorre. with my 224/228 I ran a 12.68(+450 DA) with a bad 1.96 60'<---need driver mod and better tires. With better tires and a good launch I expect low 12's with less that 400 to the wheels.. Mabe an 11.99999 with a great DA somday
