Default Rear Tire Tread Width Increase

My tires are 245/45/17 BF Goodrich G-Force Sport. If I roll the wheel wells I can fit 275/40/17's. The difference is 9.1" tread width compared to 10.3" tread width. Has anyone else made this size switch? I've got serious traction problems because of my 3.91 ring & pinion and 468 Lbs of rear wheel torque. Would this extra 1.2" tread width really make enough of an inprovement to justify the expense of buying new tires?

i had that size with the bfg dr's i think it was around 11" i rolled the fenders a little and they still scraped up the sidewall pretty good but i could have rolled more. some dr's and drag bags you should hook pretty good.... well better than you are now

Depends on the tire. I heard nittos DR's run alittle narrow and fit fine without rubbing. I have a pair in the garage waiting to be put on. MT dr's are more sticky and would probably require rolling.

I thought the 04 GTO was the only year that really benifited from drag bags. I don't have wheel hop, just massive spin.

The Nittos run narrow, I have pics of them next to the MTs and they are a good 3/4" narrower. I run the Nitto 275's on the stock rims without rolling or cutting and have never had them rub. Even when I had a stock suspension. Be advised not all are so lucky. It seems to depend on your rear cradle alignment. If its not centered you will get rub. The good news (or bad) is that I've heard as high as 50% of the cars some suspension experts have seen have had the rear cradle mis centered.

^^^+1

I run Nitto 275's without having the fenders rolled. However, they do not hook as good as the M/T's.

I'm running 275/30/18's, with the fenders cut.
