Default 01 SS full race conversion

Customer bought the car new when the camaro line was thought to be gone forever but since the introduction on the new camaro concept he has been having fun with it. The original LS1 has since been fragged and replace with a linginfelter 408 bottome end with L98 stock port heads. It is putting 500ish on the rear wheels. With 200lbs of driver it tipped the scales at a slothenly 3700# range. Lets see if we can get it down to sub 3100# sans driver.

Here is how she arived

Got it pretty much tore down. Stripped the doors to nothingness, and drilled a bunch of spot welds to get rid of some extracaricular brackets. The dash is getting stripped but the factory guages are going back in. Its also getting a momo quick release steering wheel.

Piles of weight that don't need a ride around the track anymore!

Starting things off with the main hoop

Looks good so far. Is the car being built for a specific class?

For CMC2, SS hood is OK but anything to do with Ram Air has to be replaced with non Ram Air components.

I can't tell if the hinge backing plates on the door have been removed or not, but once you get all the weight out of the door, they are no longer needed.

I also see some brackets in the rear that are questionable about being removed. Technically, the only brackets that can be removed are if they unbolt or were used as mounting points for components that are allowed to be removed.

I just re-read the original post. I thought the 408 was fragged ... my bad.

Definitely not a CMC build ...

We're following the AI rule book. Although he isn't planning on wheel to wheel racing anytime soon. He will be doing more lapping days, and time attack. Maybe after a bit of that he just might try to take a run at some of those AI mustangs!

By the way, AI-AIX is the best classes in the world!!!! The rule book is sooo thin. Gotta love that when building a car.

Got the main hoop and A pillars tacked in today. Sectioned a quarter of the A bar into the factory A pillar.

Tough to see from the pictures but the drivers side X arches outward into the door.

How much? We've done that on the passenger side , but opted for NASCAR style door bars on the driver's side to give the driver more shoulder room.

Also, thoughts on back half cross brace or full "X" vs none.

First rate work!

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

I'll get a shot of the drivers side door bars from above so you can see how far it goes in. We are definitely going to do something to brace the rear up some more. The only thing between the to rear frame sections from side to side is a spot welded floor pan. I personally am an X brace fan but its probably marginal over a simple diagonal.

I looked at the CCR and AI rule book and it appears you are good to go.

CMC, though, requires the door bars to extend toward the outer door skin if the inner skin is removed.

This used to be written a lot tighter, but an attempt to run the bars outside the plane of the main hoop/A-pillar appears to meet the intent.
