Default Track day tires

I am looking for tires that would be stickier than Hoosier R compound tires. What do you scca vette guys run. Who do you buy them from? Thanks.

I did not mean the Hoosier race slicks but the R dot tire. I found a sponsor to call on Monday. Thanks for reply. By the way, I was in Germany last month. Munich, Frankfurt, the Alps. I sure appreciate the courtesy of the drivers in Germany.

Are you looking to stick with a DOT tire? If so, are the Hoosiers you are asking about teh R6 or A6? If it's the R6, then try out the A6 and Kumho V710. I've used the A6 on my 3100lb Trans Am for a 20 minute race, and had no problems. They will overheat and get greasy if you push them too hard (I'm talking about standing on the brakes, sliding the back end coming out of corners, etc.). But, they come back within a few turns. The V710s are a little more forgiving, but even they will get greasy if you overcook them. But, for track days, both will give you great lap times with very little compromise.

If you can run slicks, do that. Call the guys listed below and tell them you want some slicks. They'll give you more traction than any DOT-R tire, and last as long or longer. You'll probably have to use more camber to use them effectively, though. I corded my first 2 sets because I thought that -1.8* would be enough. Not even close.

Thanks. I ordered some Hoosier slicks with R100 compound from Lee. I am curious about you needing a lot more camber. Does your car have poly bushings or stock? Thanks. Chuck

I think what he means is the tires are designed to run with alot of negative camber.

My car had stock front bushings. Even with everything, I could only get -1.5or -1.8* camber. It wasn't enough.

You can try to find some Vette guys that run slicks. Call LG Motorsports. They had a C5 that they road raced. Ask them what they did. Make sure you both are talking about C5 suspension pieces, though (not a tube frame).

Those R100s are going to be sticky! Have fun running away from everyone with them!!

My stock setup only gave up -0.9 camber. I was thinking or considering slotting the k member like mitch suggested. It's free vs having to purchase and install parts.

My experience with Hoosier road race slicks is the bias ply do not need serious camber but the radials need to have mucho camber or will wear off the outside edge. You also need good camber control through bump to keep them from rolling over. Dont laugh with the bias ply as they are still relatively common in roadrace slicks. I run R25 or R35 compound bias ply Hoosiers and they are very forgiving but I'm not sure anything will outrun the A6's.

Unless you are getting the bias ply, like Heavy85 mentioned, don't get radial slicks unless you have aftermarket arms (or are a Vette and can get -3* with stock stuff). No amount of slotting will get you from -.9* to -3*. I slotted mine to within 1/2" of the edge of the K-member and coulg get just above -1.5*.

Bias are more forgiving of sliding around on the track. Radials prefer to be used like a surgical instrument - no sliding and be very precise.

If you do not have poly bushings or spherical bearings you can never get the camber right because of the flex. That is the reason I asked about your bushings. When you get rid of the stock bushings you run less camber because the bushings are not allowing the camber to change. What happens(with stock bushings) is as the corner loads up the tire the camber goes more and more in the positive direction. This is why tires last 4 times longer with poly or solid bushings. The stickier the tire the more you will lose negative camber because you are achieving higher push on the bushings. Thanks for the confirmation.

Ahhh - gotcha. You know, I never thought about it that way. I knew that my car had GREAT camber gain. For every 2 inches that the tire move vertically, the top edge would tuck in 1 inch. But, I can definitely believe that the bushings were compressing and I was losing camber.

Oh, and an FYI for people running live axles with radial slicks. Get the pressure up near 30 hot. Perhaps a little more. You aren't supposed to get over 33psi or so, but with 27psi hot, I was rolling them and ended up wearing out the edges to cords in just 1 race.

Good advice on the air pressure. I run 35 psi hot on my Z06. I do not know what I will need to run with the slicks?
