Best cheapo Daily driver tire for RR?! I have two options inside.
Would the F1's(since i have two already) be better on all four corners or would the RE730 bridgestones be better? Any insights? These two are the ONLY tires in my option list.
I know there are a ton out there but these are the only two avail to me w/o having to really shell out much cash. I have the F1's up front and nitto DR's out back but i have heard it is not good to take the DR's to a road course because of the softer sidewall. I will be getting an extra set of rims to have for the DR's but i want a nice set of "street" tires instead of DR's all the time. Lemme know, thanx!
BTW-these are all 275/40/17

Thats weird Eddie.. I have heard of people running Nitto DR's on all 4 corners for Road Racing.. Nitto just came out with another DR just for road racing. It has a stiffer wall and it cost the same from what I hear.. When are you going road racing.. I want to go as well. I am setting my car up for this. Just need better shocks, stiffer sway bar, and better brakes.. All we be installed this year.

actually i just found a line on some cheap Dunlop SP5000's. So i will be just using those on the Road course. It looks like i will be going to Sebring 5/25-26 i think. Me and a few other badrappers are going so it seems. I just get the $$$ for the entry fee and hotel room.

I don't know what size wheels you are using, (might make some difference in ride and handling) but i just bought some Sumitomo 225 50zr16 tires for my 88 Supra Turbo beater and man are they nice! I like a comfortable quiet, rain shedding all rounder and found these at $90.00ea at NTB. The salseman says they are being introduced at low prices in the U.S., and I will be getting a set for my 1le as well. I can save the KDs for track days and use these for the rest of the time. A very nice tire.By the way, the price for a 245-17 SS or WS6 fittment is $123.00, I think.

I agree with guadofreak!
On the street I use DUNLOP 5000's! There are great. Awsome dry and wet weather traction!
The only down side, is that they are a soft rubber compound. So they wear faster.
I know the 245/45/ZR16's run $113 a pop from the TIRE RACK.
I highly recommend them!
Hey dunlop, the check better be in the mail!
JUST KIDDING

well i actually got screwed out of the Dunlops so i think i might just get another set of DR's and a pair of NT555's in the front.

I recently replaced them with Nitto Drag Radials on all four corners. I have run one road course with them, and the difference in traction between the Nitto's and the F1's' is night and day.
The 555R II's are better than the regular drag radials for road racing because of the stiffer sidewall, but the regular Nitto's (properly inflated) will blow any street tire away on a road course. I ran mine 35psi cold which ended up being 40psi hot on all four corners.
When I bought my tires the 555R II's were just coming out and hard to get.
I really like the traction of the Nitto drag radials on the rear for street driving. I only have some minor mods and stock torque converter, and could spin the F1's through first gear. The Nitto's don't spin at all. I can even roll into a WOT on a curve. Doing that on F1's you would slide off the road .
In cold weather the Nitto's are as bad or worse than the F1's, but I live in Texas so I don't care . Also I would be careful in the rain.
I think I am going to use my old F1's as front tires on the street, so I don't wear out my Nittos as fast, but I can't see myself putting the F1's back on the rear after getting used to having the Nittos.
Bottom Line:
Are Nitto 555R regular drag radials the best tire you can run on a road course: NO
Are they way better than the F1's on a road course: YES

Re: Best cheapo Daily driver tire for RR?! I have two options inside.
guadofreak,
Sorry to hear you got screwed ith Dunlops. Ive always had really good luck with them as daily driver tires. I love the 5000's. Because they do really well in rain as well. Then only down side I have noticed is that they were kinda fast. I think that is because they are soft rubber. But atleast the grip well for a all weather tire.
Personally Im done with Goodyear. I got the feeling that I am paying for one to many of their blimps. I think there are many tires for less $$$ and as good or better performance. Seems to me anyways.

What do you guys think about the Toyo RA-1s? I'm running a pair on the back of my car and they have amazing grip! Great in the rain too. I don't expect them to last long though, they have a 40 treadwear and pick up every pebble they run over and fling it into my wheelwell like slicks do!
Here is the RA-1:
http://www.toyo.com/tires/tire_lines/high_perf/ra1.html
The tire is sticky enough that on my bone stock 95 Formula I ran 13.89 at 98.2 in the 1/4.

Patman ...
"Toyo Proxes suck, but suck for a very long time."
That is a direct quote ... LOL!
But the comparo was between road racing tires, not on the street. I think you will be very happy with the Toyos.

Hehe, good quote Mitch!
As a street tire, I'm very happy with the Toyos. I've had them on the car for almost 2000 miles now, and they really do have incredible grip, although I'm speaking strictly from a straight line standpoint. It's nice to leave a stoplight and just stand on the throttle and the car leaps forward. There is nobody on the street that will be able to beat me in a quick stoplight race (although I haven't had any yet)
With the 8/32" of tread these tires have, they should last longer than the average "race" type tire will. Although I still expect they'll be all done by the time fall rolls around.
