Default tires and handling

ok same brand tires, tire X have a set of 275/40/17 and a set of 285/40/17. what tire will handle better on a 99ss. or how about the 275 up frt and the 285s out back. if not any, what size tires what u use on stock SS rims

Honestly, you won't see much difference. I'm assuming a stock 9.5 rim. The 285 is just a tad larger, but that means that it has to "balloon" a tad more for the sidewalls to fit the rim. This ballooning makes the tread rounder, which takes soome contact patch away. Just a WAG, but I'd way you'd only gain 5-7mm of rubber on the ground. Plus, the sidewall on a 285/40 is going to be 4mm taller than the 275/40 - which means more sidewall flex.

But, none of this is going to be felt in anything but the most extreme circumstances (and perhaps not even then). Given this choice, I'd go with all 4 the same so I could swap between front and back. And, price would determine which 4 I got - the cheaper of the 2 is what I say.

I would choose the 275 for the shorter overall height.

I would go with the 275s since the "stock" SS & WS6 wheels were all 9" wide, and a 285 would net a response disadvantage on that narrow a rim (if you could even get a tire shop to agree to mount it). A 285 might be OK on a 9.5" wheel.

Like I mentioned on the other thread, the Falken ST 615s look to be real good (anyone have open track experience with these?). The tread pattern may not be the best thing for wet track days, even at full depth, but they do have "street mod" compounding at 200 treadwear. They were (when first out) about $150.00-$160.00/tire (for 275/40 WR17s), not sure now.

Are you talking about the Kuhmo Ecsta MX? I have not used these yet, but they look like a nice track/street tire ... kinda like the original BFG KDs. Big solid tread blocks. It all depends on the rubber compound and the sidewall construction, as to how will they actually do.

I run 285s on my stock wheels, and have ever since the original Goodyears wore out may years ago. If you watch the air pressure vs tread contact, you can make them work very well .... and they look great on the car, for the daily driving. My 285 KDWs ran 30,000 miles with 8 or 10 track days (very good track manners for a street tire .... and long life). My KDWSs have seen 35,000 miles but with no track days (I bought Kuhmo V700s for the track). The fronts still have plenty left, but the rears are trying to immitate slicks.

My track tires are 265/50/16 and they will walk all over a car with ANY size street tires.

Pics with KDW 285/40/17:

Yeah ... you're probably right..... I didn't do any track days last year, so I haven't even looked at them lately. they are 265s though, for sure. I have them on the LT1 "salad shooter" wheels that I got cheap on ebay.

Here they are:

If you can't use DOT race tires, I would suggest the BFG KDs.

I also suggest the KD. I wanted to say the Nittor 555RII but the treadwear is 100 so thoes are out of the question.

I Ran my 1st Road Course Race last weekend. On a set of Yokohama ES100,s they were great! Had no problems at all. Stuck and handled great, I was very impressed as well as my buddy who has driven on other brands. For the price of 140.00 ea through Discount Tire.

about the tires, my daily drive is 295/35/18x9.5, so for this wheel 295 is the largest possible [y2k wheels]
