What are your thoughts/experiences? Class rules aside, how do they compare in terms of traction and life assuming all other driving/vehicle factors remained constant. I know the 555r is a street/track tire, but I'm just trying to decide whether to go with 4 of those for street/track, or get a set of dedicated track-only tires. If I were to go the 555r route, it would be on a 275/40/17. If I decided to get some race-only tires they would go on stock 16" TA wheels and most likely be 255/50/16.

If you want the most stick you need to go with a dedicated track tire. If you have to compromise then that is what it is. Do you mind having rocks fly into your fender wells? The race tires will do this. Do you mind not having the most traction available? Then opt for a street tire. Now Hoosier has the new R6 (road race compound) and A6 (autocross compound) hitting the track. Early results are showing some serious improvements in overall grip over the RS305's. Again this is a race tire. So if your leaning towards a race tire and Hoosier is your choice opt for the new R6. I have no experience with Nitto tires.
