Default What oil are you road racers using?

Curretly I am using 5w-30 mobil 1. I am also using a custom made oil cooler, my average temps normal driving are 185*.. and about 210* if i beat on it. Never been to the track with this combo yet.

My friends who road race at Miller Motorsports in Toole UT, use some pretty thick stuff. 15w-50 for example, or 20w-50. (they have turbo cars, Evo 9's)

My car has 108k miles, never had an issue with it at all.. doesnt eat oil ect. I was wondering what you guys would use for a race, 25min intervals, 2.2 mile course with altering elevation, 85-90*f weather, track temp of 125+*f

anyone reccomend something thicker for this type of race?

I run mobile 1 synthetic 15 w 50 and I run an extra quart on the track. I never want the pick up to get air in a hard corner. My concern is not so much the viscosity of the oil but its ability to not break down at high temp. Synthetics have higher temps than petroleum oil.

Right now I run about 5.5-6 quarts because of the addition of my oil cooler and lines, and the dipstick reads like it should. So would I need to then add an additional quart like you do for those reasons?

Thank you guys, for posting.

Street: 6 quarts
Road Race: 7 quarts
I run Redline or Motul synthetic oil

Don't let the pickup become uncovered or bye bye motor. Mine has a 7100rpm redline on a stock 43K mile '99 LS1 shortblock, Katech rod bolts, AFR 205's, LS6 intake, ported TB, TSP 233/239 .600" 112LSA cam, long tube headers, true dual 3" exhaust. Runs strong. 127.4mph in the 1/4 n/a 2950lbs with driver.

Big cam and rod bolts to keep it together.

Is there a known problem with the LS1 oil pickup that makes some of you paranoid about oil starvation? Running too much oil will cause it to foam, and oil will also expand at higher temperatures.

Edit: I guess there is! I just ran a quick search. I guess I'll take everyones advice and run 7 qts. I'll be at the NHIS test and tune on the 27th and there is a high G left hander. It would be ironic to blow the LS1 in my RX7 after swapping for more reliability!

****, I thought I should be running light oil like 5w 30. I use full synthetic though for the thermal breakdown protection. I'm glad I checked this thread. I was under the impression that a light oil is going to allow it to flow easier and give more power due to having less rotating inertia being absorbed by moving the thicker heavier oil.
