Default cam for road racing/street use???

I am considering the GMPP ASA cam, or a 228/232 XE lobe 110 or a 224/224 cam. what do you road racers think?? the road racers I have talked says that max torque between 3000-5000 rpm is the MOST important thing as far as power goes for road racing....

thanks alot guys!!

If you run hard you will be in the 4000-6600 range. If you run around bogging it like some do then you need low end. Get a GX-3 from LGM talk to Lou.

Speedpup, It will be almost always raced at Sebring Int. Raceway. my buddy races a ZO6 there, and he only hits about 135-140 on the back straight.

not really familar with Sebring but even on the short South Course at Pocono I keep my engine on the pipe like a sportbike I redline at 6600-67 but use it all What will you hit there?

I run a TSP 233/239 .600/.603" 112LSA cam. 4-7K rpm powerband and it works well. 20K miles on this setup and never even broken a valvespring. I have only changed oil/plugs and it runs like a top! Redline 4th often (3:90's with 285/30/18's) and T56.

Remember higher duration cams like compression. Get it over 11:1 which will still run on 91 octane and 93 will accept even higher.

My combo:
milled AFR 205's
long tube headers
Katech rod bolts
custom cold air kit
7100rpm redline

That LG cam would be a good choice. The cams in the 22x range IMO are tiny. Rod bolts are great insurance for engine longevity.

The cam in my signature is ideal for road racing that bogs the motor down to 3000 rpm range on occasion. It makes very strong power at all rpm, but it's especially strong in the mid-range. I'm also a big fan of the G5X-3 cam...but that's quite a bit more in duration than my cam.

Too small unless this will be street/track car...SpeedPup knows and to make up for the torque loss if any, think 3.90's or 4.10's...besides, the shorter the gears(ring/pinion) the more strength you gain! The GX3 is a good place to start!

I like it! But I would probably start to think about changing valve springs right about now if you haven't already!

If I understand the abuse a Road Race car gets, and I take mine to Road Atlanta three times a year, they see more than enough sustained high rpm action. With a high lift cam with fast ramps, you will be asking for trouble. I have been told to keep the duration up(doesn't help daily drivers), the lift on the lower side, and keep the lazy lobes. I only have a TR224 and my valve train takes a royal beating out there. If I went more lift, then I probibly would have some troubles. I keep my rpm range from 4000 to 6500 as much as I can.

Brain, what would you think with a ASA 226/236 .525 110?
I will get heads later on too, most likely is the AFR 205's or the TFS 215's, something with velosity ports, I want the trq.

I ran a TR224 at Hockenhiem Ring many many times and had zero problems. I'm now running the TSP Magic Stick v.1 w 4.11s (doing the same type of racing) with zero problems. I've put thousands of miles on this setup out on the autobahn at cruising speeds of 115mph plus, with zero problems. I would not be afraid to run a high lift cam but your right on the lazy lobes. It's gonna come down to what you feel comfortable with running........I drive mine like I stole it, if it breaks I'll fix it. Brian, looking forward to seeing you at Road Atlanta.

That would be a great cam, but that 110lsa might be a little rough on the tuner. It will sound great though.

Brian, I've got to look at the schedule to see when their first run is, can't wait to get out there for some more course time. Are you in the Atlanta area??
