Default What oil for the race track?

I have a stock bottom end LT1 with ~98k miles on it and I'm running mobil 1 5w30 for the street right now. Would this oil be fine on the race track? I have a becool radiator so the coolant temps will be under control, but no oil cooler so the oil will get up there as far as temp goes so I just wanted to make sure my oil wouldn't thin out too much.

I would advise something a bit heavier. If you want to stay with Mobil 1 go with their 0W40 or try to find 5W40 Delvac. Try bobistheoilguy website,,,,, cool place with alot of info.

Dude, you're in FL. If the coldest it gets is above 32ºF, you should be running at least 10W30. Read your drivers manual. That being said, with as high milage as you've got, I'd consider going heavier.
I've only got ~65K in my car and this past summer I ran Mobil 1 15W50. Temps stayed cooler, and I got the same milage out of each tank of fuel. Meaning no comperable parasitic drag. In the winter here, I do use 5w30 as it does occasionally go bellow 32ºF. Soon as the temps raise in March, I'm going back to to 10W30. Three months or 3K miles(which ever comes first) later, I'm going back to 15W50.

They are both the same weight when they are heated up, 5w30 just gives a little less oil pressure when the oil isn't heated up, no biggie.

Whats the 5w40 delvac I've never heard of it before. Is it M1? I really don't care what brand I use, whatever works the best is what I'll go with.

Start up is the issue. The lighter weight will flow faster at start up.

However, it will also shear off the bearings faster.

That's why you want to run as thick an oil as possible, for the given ambient temperature.

That's why I listed what weight I use during all the seasons temp changes where I'm at.

Delvac is a different brand. I believe it's either Chevron or Havoline.

Delvac is Mobil 1's heavy duty diesel oil. It's probably Mobil's best oil. Heck, it's one of the best non esoteric oils out there. It may have recently changed it's name though so my advise is to check out that website. Seriously,,, it's the best site for researching what oil is best for you and how different oils stack up against one anouther in independent testing.

If you are stuck on a 30W oil,,,, try Castrol German made 0W30. It always does very good in testing and it's a heavy 30W, almost a 40W oil.

I run Mobil 1 15W50 after running 10w30 Mobil 1 at Road Atlanta and seeing my oil pressure drop quite a bit after running the **** out of the car. After switching to the heaver stuff, oil pressure stays right up there even after a long day at the track. It still drops some, but not nearly as bad as it did with the 10w30.

Yeah, a most excellent site! Just make sure you "put on the blinders" and desensitise yourself before heading over there, as most of the members/users are TOYota/import ONLY lovers and GM/domestic haters/bashers (and they make SURE you know it, and bring it up even when it has NOTHING to do with the topic at hand!!).
