Default road racers... lets talk about brakes...

Brakes! Ive done searches and read for hours. the general consensus ive gotten is that a fair amount of improvement can be had by upgrading the factory rotors and adding some SS lines with some aggressive brake pads. I wanted to ask you guys to post here and talk about some of the differences youve seen/experienced, on a road course between just upgrading the factory system, and going with an aftermarket brake upgrade. im looking to spend no more than about $2500 on a brake upgrade to give the car a competitive, world class brake setup that can be taken to a track and beat on. im leaning towards a certain upgrade kit that includes rotors, and porsche 996 TT front calipers. opinions? what really works in the real world on the track?

I had that kit on my old street car for several years and was absolutely amazed at the braking performance and how well they held up over time.

Maintenance costs were 1/4 what the factory or C5 brakes were.

You will NOT be disappointed. And Steve is a great guy to work with.

You can also check out Wilwood's stuff its pretty good and fairly priced.... just remember.. you'll have a hard time getting "world class brakes " for under 2500 bucks... I had the Brembo Gran Turismo kit on my Formula for a year or so and loved them..

What turned me off of Willwood or Stoptech was that I was locked into Willwood or Stoptech pads and rotors.

The brakes Steve offers are off the shelf Porsche brakes and easily available from a number of vendors and suppliers.

Now, maybe things have changed ... it would pay dividends to do some homework on consumables.

I've tried a number of different pad compounds on a variety of cars, truly preferring CarboTech (www.CTBrakes.com) for pads. They offer a great street pad (Bobocat) that's not too dusty and a variety of track pads XP series that I run on the track.

Hope this helps!

I run P-car products Caliper and rotors on the front and back with Pagid RS44 pads since 2000. I am quite satisfied and a lot of people are amazed with the tremendous braking capability.

so then many people seem to like the P-car conversion- for those of you who have them is there anything above and beyond the kit sold for about 2,000 that you need to give the car track-capable braking? say, a proportioning valve or a change in the rear brake system? ive heard the Stainless steel or braided brake lines are a must...

Brake lines are a good idea along with a really good fluid.

I also had 2 sets of front brake pads ... street and track. I had the best luck with Pagid Black for the track and Porsche street issue pads.

I used the stock brake tune, but had terrible rear wheel hop when I really got on the brakes hard. A prop valve probably isn't a bad idea.

Some R compound tires wouldn't be a bad idea to go along with the brake upgrade

Ill have to check into the p-car factory pads. so far everyone ive ever talked to has had great things to say about the p-car brake kit. anyone know how much/where to get a proportioning valve setup? oh and are the factory rear brakes adequate for hard street use/ occasional road track use?

From my perspective on the rear brakes I didnot have much luck with them for track driving . For autocross no problem, but for hard track driving , the rear pads would wear to fast and smoke irregardless of the different compounds I used.

Its probably best to wait on doing the rear brakes . 4 piston fixed calipers and a c-clip make for a long brake pedal at the most in opportune times.
