Default power steering fluid change - '02 3800 V6

so, I want to replace my power steering fluid and put fresh in. I plan on removing the inlet hose to the fluid reservoir and plugging the reservoir and letting the old fluid pump out into an old milk jug while pouring new fluid in the reservoir. I'll keep doing this until i see new fluid coming into the milk jug.

my only question - what tube is the return line? I suspect its the smaller of the two. Does anyone know for sure?

thanks

To do it right so you get pretty much all of the old fluid out of the rack....you need to put the front wheels up in the air. Then while you are pouring new fluid in you need to have someone in the car turning the steering wheel full left and right the whole time.

The return line is the line that is connected to the bottom of the reservoir. Pop it off like you said....put the end into a jug to drain out.

Do not let the reservoir run dry.

Huh....thats different than my 1998. Mine has only one port on the bottom....returning fluid from the rack.

The hose you want to drain from is the one NOT hooked up to the pump.

You'll also need to block off its port on the fluid tank. You can do this easy with a spare piece of hose. Hook it up to the port and then bend it in a "J" so that it snorkles above the fill hole. (You can tape it or strap it to the tank so it stays put.)

+1

I'd share from my personal experience with this that in order to keep the reservoir from running dry, one needs to be standing by the tank with a BIG bottle of fluid with the foil completely off the top of the bottle. (It drains really fast.)

The person inside the car needs to move quickly with turning the wheels, also. This goes really fast. You will probably also need to big bottles of fluid to do the flush, depending on how skilled the person inside the car is.
