Update from Frost:
"Your car had a piece of trash from the air lid seal on the front of the MAF screen in front of the element. Removing that, the MAF reports BETTER, but still LOW. Inside, warm, at 4K RPMs (no load) with the trash it was about 22-23% lean; after that it was about 16% lean (still not good even though "better"). This costs some power and makes a lot of heat inside the cats.
The car has misfire codes (0300 and 0304) but has no misfire. It could be a double whammy; bad MAF and plugged cats. I couldn't do WOT testing as the road is still wet, but the cats go away with the work and the car will be properly tuned when done. That means that both of these will be non-issues on the other end."
So, it looks like everyone was right on this one. It was a bad/plugged MAF, and possibly plugged cats. Both of these are getting "fixed" as we speak...uh, I mean type. Yeah, that works.

I wonder how it would have run with the intake blockage cleared and the MAF unplugged? That might have given some indication as to whether or not there were other issues, and/or whether or not there might still be issues after the mods.
Either way, hope the new setup takes care of the problems.

Apparently, one of the mainfold bolts was a little stubborn. They got it out though. I'm glad I let them do this. I never would have gotten that sucker out by myself.

If your already that deep into it I would have your guy pull that other head and put some new head gaskets on it. One less thing to worry about. good luck man hope all works out well for ya!

Man this is good stuff! Here I am wondering how much of a PITA its going to be to pull a 6 bolt LSX head off my studded LSX block in order to change out my lifters if I determine they are bad. I no longer have use of a lift anymore and the thought of being bent over the car to do this makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up! I'm not a youngster anymore and my patience isn't what it used to be either.

Also I agree with the above post, scares me you are an aircraft mechanic, a lot of that should translate to cars. Are you military, commercial? A sock wrapped around your front turbine blade would be an easy find for you right? Checking your car out for basics shouldn't be that different. Not trying to be a jerk, just sayin

I'd be more comfortable working on a TF34-GE 100A. This LS1 has parts I've never heard of. The mechanics are no where near the same. In the last 20 years, I have spent more time on airplanes than in cars. I know where the CIT and TIT sensors are on a TF39, but don't ask me where the EGR valve is on this car. I'm hoping it won't have one when I get it back.
