Meziere water pump vs LS2 water pump?

Default Meziere water pump vs LS2 water pump?

My water pump is almost 20 years old, so I am going to replace it when I do my H/C/I upgrade this winter. Aside from the cost, is there any reason to run an LS2 water pump instead of a Meziere 55GPH electric water pump? I don't know much about the electric water pumps, so I need inputs.

I decided to run the electric pump. My reasoning was it freeze up power, revs faster, cools the car down faster, and just looks a lot nicer. All that was worth it for me.

it' about a 7-12whp gain. 1-2mph on the track in similar conditions

I have been all over the interweb, and I can't seem to find any reason to run the LS2 pump over the Meziere, other than the price. All I care about is 1/4 mile times. Will the Meziere EWP result in .1, .2, .3 .... in the 1/4 mile? I don't know how 1-2MPH relates to quickness.

I will not race the car enough for the EWP bypass switch to be a variable. LS2 pump wins this.

With a 160 thermostat, would the EWP cool the motor more than the LS2? ????

Would the EWP have a better lifetime than the LS2 pump? ?????? This might be the decider.

EWP frees up horsepower. $600 for the EWP, this is a push.

You should do EWP for track. The pump basically runs as though engine is at 1800 rpm. You can do that between passes and cool heads off better than mechanical pump. Meziere lifespan approx 2000 hours iirc. Mine been 2.5 years worry free on a mostly DD. except when down for more surgery. Lol

Engine idling but pump at 1800 rpm makes improved cool down imo

You can also run a PWM(Pulse width modulated) speed controller on the electric water pump connected to a thermal sensor and remove the thermostat, Did this on a road race car a few years ago and the consistency of the engine temps was amazing,, the only downside is the PWM controller was almost as much as the pump.. You can add a switch to override and force the pump to full rpm for between session cooling, I always wanted the engine to 170 before going on track and to keep it form heat soaking while waiting to weigh out after the session.

I won't go to the track much. Maybe once a year.

I thought I had seen you said all you cared about was 1/4 mile times. Must have got my threads crossed. Either way I see no downside to EWP

I mean I don't care about horsepower numbers. I care about how quick the car is If there is no downside to EWP over the LS2 pump, then I will probably go that route.

Right. It was said earlier the EWP runs at a speed equivalent to the engine at 1800 RPM. So if you're going down the road at 3000 RPM, will it still get the job done??

The Mezieres are friends of the family. We race against each other.

They use their 55 GPH pump on road race cars and circle track engines running continuous WOT. The only time they had issues was with Livernois doing durability testing and after days of continuous running there were some issues at the tops of the cylinder bores getting too hot.

My car has mega heat soak when I turn the engine off...LS2 crammed in an RX7. The radiator is pretty small too. It does fine at speed with air flowing over it, but with the AC on in traffic it runs hotter than I'd like. I think the increased flow at idle will help me. I also want the ability to run the pump with the engine off kinda like a turbo timer to prevent heat soak.

I would not run electric for any kind of road race period. For 1/4 mile or freeway runs sure. I just don't think an electric pump can keep up or flow as much as a mechanical pump for a road race application.

OH!, I assumed that the EWP connected to the ECU and sped up at higher motor RPMs.

What about Edelbrock 8896 (claims 16.5% flow improvement over stock), PRW 1434600, or Evans EP3913 (claims over 20% flow improvement over stock)?

The Edelbrock having a replaceable center section might be a good feature.

FWIW

When my 91 RS got the restoration and LS1 swap at Hawk's Motorsports we discussed the benefits of doing an EWP. The short version was for a car that might see the track one or twice a year but a lot of daily driving and long road trips the EWP really wasn't worth the extra cost for the benefit. For a car that was at the track the EWP was definitely worth the cost.

The $600 EWP would have required paid for a pair of electric cut outs for my 91 RS which picked up 20 whp in dyno testing. The cut outs are fun and get used often.

In an ideal situation I would have liked to have the cut outs AND the EWP AND a set of Pantera EFI's ign-1a coils etc...

the stock ones cools the engine just fine so that would be a waste of money. If you're going to do any other water pump it should be the electric or just keep the stock one

Default Cooling + Water Jacket Pressure

Hi FCar, the Edelbrock "cartridge" 8896 Water Pump is very close to the Drake water pump in design. (US Patent expired)

I worked with John Drake when his water pump was designed, balanced flow, dual volute, pump tester/dyno.

Our design DOUBLED the water pressure in the Water Jacket AND required 1/2 the power to drive compared to the OEM's pump.

The designed ALSO "balanced" flow (dual volutes) allowing BOTH cylinder heads to have equal temperature.

MOST of the performance gain reasons could be seen/understood when the impeller was viewed, a VERY easy job WITH a cartridge water pump.

THUS, there are performance gains with a good water pump design.
