Default Build or buy LS2 aluminum 6.0?

Pretty sure I've spun a rod bearing in my ls2 in my 63 Chevy II wagon. Will know for sure upon teardown. For the sake of time I'm considering just buying a short block and building this one back in time. This thing has close to 100k on the clock and the stock pistons had valve reliefs cut in them. Would I be a fool to keep the original pistons if everything looks good and re-ring? How much can a aluminium LS2 block be bored? If the bores looked good can they hone. 002-.005 or is boring necessary? If you bought a short block who has decent buys? Possibly consider a stroker if close to the same money and my heads would be ok compression wise.

If you decide on a new short block, you will need to see if you need an aluminum block or will a LQ4 based block be sufficient.

LS2 block can go .030 all day. I re-used 80k mile pistons in an LY6 once, but they literally had no wear on them at all. If you decide to sell that block by chance, hit me up via PM please. I’ll come get it.

Per the post above I would send it out to RED and have Steve sleeve it and then stroke it to 427 cubes. Just my .02.
Smaller cam that will smoke the tires off your 63 wagon.

Not sure my 61.5cc heads would work well that big. But yeah my tires would hate life.

You can probably get away with a .005 hone to clean up and straighten up the cylinder walls and get a set of .005 over pistons and call it a day. May I a 4” stroke while you are in there too lol

I would bore it minimum just to get the walks round and straight. There are no new LS2 blocks anymore so keep it going as long as you can. You could buy a used long block and run it till. Probably not a bad idea.

I've honed plenty of LS2 blocks and did new rings/bearings without issues. Oddly enough I would buy them all with rod bearing issues. For some reason that engine just does that in the GTO and Trailblazers.
You don't know what direction you need to go until your machine shop measures the bores anyway.

Front sump oil pans and a junk pressure relief valve built into the oil pans that can stick. I was cruising down the highway at 55 when suddenly the dash lit up like a xmas tree and next thing I know the engine was knocking. Spun #5 and 6.

On my LS2 sleeved and stroked to 427 cubes I used stock L92 heads with updated springs and push rods. Stock L92 rockers. I used a 220I/225E, .600 lift and 114 CL cam. Super easy to tune. 3000 stall converter from Yank. Did a touch under 500 rwhp. I know not very big numbers but it super fun to drive. Had it in a 67 Nova. Yeah my rear tires hated me on more than one time.

Realistically you can have a super fun day at the dyno, make a “hero” number and it suck to drive, OR you can make a respectable number on dyno day and it be just a ton of fun to drive. Choices, choices. Power under the curve is ALWAYS more fun than a peak number. It’s why soooo many guys go turbo and hate their car. Sure 900-1000 wheel sounds like fun, until you realize that it SUUUUUCKS to drive. Killer car sir. Don’t ever be ashamed of 500 wheel, no matter the build.

I totally agree with the 500whp (or 500 ANYWHERE!). If anyone woulda said 500whp (550+@crank) wasnt a big number 20 years ago, they'd have been commited!!!

The Nova was a truly fun car. Heidt front and rear 4 link. C5 brakes all around. Went down the road to fund a new project.
Pic of it coming home on the trailer and a pic of under the hood when I bought. Previous owner had got totally screwed by someone on a totally botched LS swapped. But the Nova was a real SS car and zero rust.
Makes me chuckle every time I look at the engine compartment.
