I think this is an accurate description of the VIN:
1st digit: Country of origin: 1 = USA, 2 = Canada.
2nd digit: G = General Motors
3rd digit: Division, 1 = Chevrolet.
4th digit: Restraint system:
A = Non-passive, B = Automatic belts, C = Inflatable restraint
5th digit: Series: P = Camaro Sport Coupe, S = Camaro Berlinetta
6th & 7th digit: Body Style: 87 = Sport Coupe
8th digit: Engine : See specific year (camaro info) for breakdown.
9th digit: Check digit - used to verify that the VIN was recorded correctly.
10th digit: Year: B = 1981
11th digit: Letter indicating assembly plant
L = Van Nuys, California, N = Norwood, Ohio
12th through 17th digits: Sequential production number starting with 100001.

Production sequence digits in the VIN can't be translated back to the actual build number. It's a mix of all Camaros and Firebirds, and it's not even necessarily when it was completed out of all of those, only when it was originally scheduled to be. The WS6 and SS owners can get actual build numbers from ASC and SLP, but the GM-only F-bodies don't have something like that.
You can find out what is known about year totals (unfortunately some years have much less information than others) by looking at the sites I've listed in the 'Firebird Production' post linked to in my sig.
I can decode your VIN; I guess PM it to me if you're too paranoid to just post it here (hundreds of people have posted theirs for carfax requests ).

I am also interested
I still cant find anything on how many 75th Anniversary models were made.
My car is 1 of 507 just for being a Formula with the 3.23 rear.
So I'm really curious as to how many of my car were made.
My options:
Model: Formula
Color: Black
Package: Pontiac 75th Anniversary
_______ Includes: T-Tops,
_______ Leather wheel and Shift ****,
_______ 3.23 Performance rear,
_______ Chrome wheels
I dont mean to hijack the thread, but if you happen to find anything while helping out CATCHME, let me know.

VIP1 - post what the option code is, and/or link to the thread where I posted all the info I could find about the 75th anniv. package. Perhaps someone with access to the GM database could do a search for Formulas with that package's RPO. Have you tried checking with http://www.phs-online.com/ to see if they can find this out?

http://www.phs-online.com/ can probably tell me, but I'm looking for a free solution first.
Its not expensive ($35-$45), but its information that is probably available elsewhere for free.
Here is the link where you (ACW) laid out the different models and packages:

Well, theoretically available elsewhere - like I said, it seems that the only possible place is the GM database... so if you do ever find out, please post it so it's finally available online.
(Btw, I was referring to the thread specifically about the 75th Anniv. stuff, but I did summarize it in the 'Firebird Models' thing so that's sufficient. )

What, you can't say 'the total is x'? Ain't no complex top-secret data (But at the rate this has been going, probably not going to be finding out any time soon anyhow )
Yeah, that's the thread... search function was down the other day.
