Default Need help with sbc 350

Ok i am picking up a 75 blazer with a 350 in and I need to know how I can ID the year the block is. The problem is someone changed engines and the last owner was having problems getting the right starter i guess. He replaced the flexplate and now it is fucked again.
I'm thinking its b/c of shims but could be diff year starter maybe? some input would help guys. I need to buy a flexplate and was wondering if the year could cause the problems I'm describing.

starters are the same as long as you have correct one for the number of teeth on the flexplate. definitly a shim problem if it cranks but after a while eats the flexplate up. does it sound like it is scrubbing?

starters are all the same, except for straight and staggered bolt

there should be a number on the passenger side of the engine stamped on a pad underneth the head

Ok thanks guys that gives me a few ideas. It does crank doesn't really sound to me like its scrubbing. Does it matter on how many teeth the flexplate has? I mean to year of engine? So I can basically just count the flexplate teeth and try to buy a starter that is for that?

that is correct. the 168 tooth flywheel is a little larger and therefore the starter is a little farther out than the 153 tooth flywheel starter.

IIRC the staggered bolt starters are 158 tooth, and the straight bolt is the 16x tooth one

[QUOTE=slvr98camaro;10042795]starters are all the same, except for straight and staggered bolt

therefore, not all starters are the same. thats the only ones for a gen1 sbc, staggered or straight.

what is the original color of the mill in question? orange is pre 76 there are two flywheels for small and big blocks but not all blocks are cross drilled, the truck engines generally use the 168 tooth cross bolted starter while light duty stuff generally uses 153 tooth straight bolt staters, shimming the stater can be a real bear you want 1/8 inch of clearance between the shaft and the teeth if you find a endbell that requires no shimming KEEP IT!!! I'll even transfer them to new starters because it:s such a bear i have a lot of experiance with gen-1 mills there are some weird standard shift bellhousings out there my 65 uses one cast iron starter if you have this one i'd be surprised but you never know the casting date on the block ends with the last digit of the year it was cast ie 5678 you have to make a educated gues if its' 58 68 78 ect

3970010 should be what you find i'd just get a new flexplate from pioneer 168 tooth and a cross bloted starter i just use a 75 3/4 ton with a 350 to get parts never heard of a t.h.300 i'ts more than likley a 350 unless it's a super turbine 300 from a buick but i doubt it but u never know

not the casting numbers for small chevy. check on the top of the block on the drivers side where the bellhousing bolts on, that will be your block casting number.

Ok can someone help with the diff between the staggered starter and non? and how can i tell what flexplate i have besides counting teeth are they diff sizes? and the starter on there now has no shims. and gets stuck sometimes so it needs shimmed I tried to shim it and, now its to far making me think its the wrong starter for the flexplate is only hitting half the teeth on the plate.

check the front side of the teeth on the flexplate. sounds like they are all chewed up or it's broken.
