I agree w/Racehead, you can build a cheap bb and make plenty of hp off of sheer torque. I've heard of guys taking 400ci sb's with 350 cranks(477ci) and revving them to 8k with a "kind of sort of mild" hyd. flat tappet cam(more rpm=more hp). I also have a neighbor/friend that took his 385 sb to 10k on three different occasions with a hyd. cam, but he snapped a pushrod each time and only god knows what else he messed up.
And you can pick up a bb w/bare hands I've done it. But it was a bare block which can't weigh too much more than 200 pounds. I had to pick up a fully dressed 305 to move it five frickin' feet and messed up my knee for a couple of weeks.(I'll never do anything that stupid again!!)

theres no replacement for displacement is completely true. i rebuilt a 383 stroker that came in my TA and i have 9 grand into it and im running 11.90. i made a few costly mistakes buying parts that didnt do anything at all to my ET after promising the world. see if you can find a BBC someone ran to hell and rebuid it- you can still use the heads and intake and all and just buy the rotating assembly if you need to and bearings, timing chain/gears, ect. i rebuilt a 454 for a buddy of mine like that and it lasted 2 yrs at the track almost every weekend with 100 shot of spray running thru it. just make sure it wasnt blown or you may have a lot more damage inside that you wanna deal with.

me and a buddy carried a 454 complete shortblock down into the basement of his house- its harder than hell but it can be done.

Big Block would def be the most power right off the bat,you could pick up some good rectangle port iron heads, port em valves roller cam pistons and cast bottom end and have a nice little nitrous combo...Got a buddy going like 10.40s in a full weight malibu on a DR with a 468 on only a 150 shot. Small Blocks are amazing i love building them, but unless you got money for good heads your fucked.Other than that SBC's are amazing, but bang for the buck is BBC Hands down!
Heres a picture of a simple 427 that put down almost 700 hp and is taking a 2300 lb pro stock truck 8.90's...Faster than we thought it would be!

The same money put into a Big Block will go futher than in a Small Block as far as power output. Cubes is Rule #1! Small Block parts are more plentyful than Big Blocks.

And Racehead has even beat LS1s with his BBC. (mine included...tho we're 1-1 so far).

But there is another OLD saying in the race car world. Cubic inches, or cubic dollars. I had a .030 over 396 (aka a 402) in a full dress 62 Impala with a mild cam, Edlebrock intake & a 750 Holley with headers & 4.11s that would run low 13s. And back in the early 70s that was some feat! I think I had $500 in the motor.

Big block secrets: oval port heads, 40* advance, cold plugs with big gaps, & run it pig rich (thank you Grumpy Jenkins!)
