I think that's kinda a weighted question. I had a buddy that had a 2-bolt block that went 12.1 in his camaro. So he was makin prolly around 400 HP. and it held up well. He beat the living crap outta it and didnt chance the oil once last season! haha. We drained it this year and it had less than 3 quarts in there. But none the less nothing was hurt and the crank was fine. The whole bottom end was stock GM stuff.

Yeah this motor has all been gone through with redone rods, crank, KB flat tops, and ive wrapped it to 7300 once with no problems. I beat the **** out of this motor and i still have no problems. I ask because im adding heads and a cam this season with NOS and just seeing what others have done.

500 hp is the generally accepted limit for a 2 bolt block

I agree,it would be safe to say 400 would be all we would like to see.If more might look at a cap change!

we've had 2-bolt blocks take 500+ ponies without a problem. Use quality fasteners and it'll be a big help (arp here)

I would get rid of the KB pistons if you are going to shoot juice at it.They will end up coming apart.

Default 2 bolts

I had a two bolt, didn't last long, over 6 grand the main caps were probably moving. The bearings wore out quick. I had ARP bolts in it. I would look for a good 880 four bolt. It has a higher nickel content. I beat the heck out of mine and it is still alive. I had forged internals, clevite bearings and gapless rings. Also bought some nascar solid roller lifters to fit the taller lifter bores.

When I had my shop we built an engine for a customer that started out as a low-boost engine and then later upgraded to a T-Trim. It made 500+ at the wheels for a long time (about three years) eventually it tore up a piston. But it was a 2-bolt main engine at the time.

I used to work for a well known turbo-kit company and we made 625 w/ twin turbos and intercooler for marine applications. That was done on a cast crank as well. Later, I built circle track (dirt) with two bolts that put out in excess of 525 with cast cranks and 2-bolts. Never broke a cap or crank. On asphalt or concrete with good hook-up, I would limit it to 450.

Most people don't realize that Chevy used two different 4-bolt caps. Most are common grey iron and aren't as stong as the two bolt caps. They also made nodular iron caps (they have an "N" cast into the cap number) that are much stronger. Almost as strong as steel. Hope this helps!

This is interesting to me, because I am running a 2 bolt 383 which is pushing the #'s in my sig, which translates to about 420 hp. I couldnt get a hold of a 4 bolt 880 block when building mine, so I went with the two bolt. Any long term issues I should watch out for?

When you get close to the 450 to 500 Hp level with a 2 bolt you will see signs of micro welding going on between the caps and the block. What is happening is the cap is moving on the block back and forth and transfers metal between the 2 surfaces. The better of the 2 caps is the 512 cap.
