ten years ago i ran a 418ci dry sumped small block for four years in a 2090# 69 camaro that ran 8.70's @152. used a .720 reed roller with crane lifters, rev kit, comp steel rockers and stud girdle. Titanium valves and retainers were used to lighten valvetrain with jesel drive. never had a valve train related incident with this setup. a good mid six roller with good lifters and stable valvetrain will spin to 7500, just be sure to match bottom end with comparable parts.

probably springs also, unless you get a small solid roller.may have to get a timing chain with a thrust button also.

I just don't see many people putting a hydralic roller in these 60s and 70s small blocks so I thought maybe you had to machine the blocks or something.

The newer generation sbc's 86 and up have a bigger base circle... comp cam's has come out with a line or "retro-fit" hydraulic rollers for old school sbc's (pre-86)

Actually the difference with the newer blocks is that they have bosses in the lifter valley to bolt the factory 'spider' in that holds the lifters in place. What you need are a set of retro roller lifters that are available from a few of the manufacturers. These lifters are designed to let you run a roller cam in the older blocks.

im in the process of rolelr cam in 70's sbc block. you need alot more then you think, you need.
a thrust bearing on the front of the cam to prevent cam walk.
retro fit link bar style lifters
most hydraulic roller cams are broze and need bronze dist gear..ext
special length pushrods
matching springsa
i reccomend you use a non-step nose hydraulic roller cam, or go for the better route and just get a sold cam cut to your specs, hope that helped
