choices.....HELP!! This is my first post,but i did a search and could not find anything,on this topic. I have a 72 vega my goal with this car is to get it into the 9s i have a 9 inch rear with 4:10s and its gutted with 29/14 50 -15s in the rear,caged, with a ladder bar rear,the 383 is tired.should i go with a big block and build that or a big cube small block.i would like to do this on all motor and later add nitrous.I know the big block i could build with aluminum heads and save the weight difference some what on the small block.I think it would be cheaper to build the big block over the small.Not sure what direction to go in please help.Thanks in advance for everyones help.

you could get the car into the 10s easy with a street/strip small block pushing 500 hp, but if you're aiming for 9s and want to do it on a budget N/A, I'd go the big block route. For about 6-8 grand you could have a motor pushing 650-700 hp at the flywheel on pump gas, and that gets my buddy's 3400 lb nova into the 10.30's at 128 mph.

i'm a small block believer but i believe in a quest for 9s on motor a dump truck motor would be your best option. a 496 with a 700+ lift cam and good aluminum heads should get you 650-700 hp.good luck.

I would go Big Block for sure. They are a little more pricy than a small block, but it will be worth it in the end. On a decent small block w/ nitrous, you should hit 9's in that car. Or with a decent big block you could do it as well. What sort of transmission are you running, and what stall, does it have a brake? This will make a big difference as well.

HE SAID VEGA! you could build a killer sbc for the cost of what it will take to put a bbc in that car you either will be going full tube chassis route with a strut front end or a front strut section then you have high prices on headers plus then the car is nose heavy with a short wheelbase so definately go smallblock.

a 9 second vega is easy to do with a small block. guy in our netwrok of freinds has a 72 with a 9 inch rear and stock style suspension with 228x9 slicks, he runs a 406 small block, dart heads 220's with around 13:1 compression big solid roller cam, 2 in primary headers, powerglide with 5000 stall trans brake, car is not caged just a 6 pt bar, car went 9.79 at 128 at pomona super chevy. motor dyno'd over 600hp.
