Default Forged or Cast

My car has a ZZ4 in it, and I've always wondered, cast or forged crank? Some places that sell it list it as forged, others cast.

I'm guessing Nodular Iron but searching GMPP online will tell you for sure.

GMPP lists it as forged, so does crate engine depot and sallee chevrolet. My year one catalog lists it as nodular iron. Dammit.

Crankshaft: 12556307 Forged Steel

Straight from GMPP and Sallee Chevrolet. Guess once I finally get some miles on mine and tear it down years down the road I'll find out.

I guess Year One is retarded. Their catalog says Nodular Cast Iron, when all the other sources I listed listed it as forged. The reason it startled me was because I think I saw that somewhere else too, and that would **** me off if I did have a cast crank.

Forged crank - cast pistons.

My ZZ4 bottom end has been rock solid. I shift mine at 7200 and it's made more than 500 passes down the strip since i got. The crank has even survived about a dozen bottles of juice with a 200 shot. I can't say the same for the ZZ4 pistons.

That's what I wanted to hear. I want to save up for some AFR 195s and a cam and some other goodies that would probably put me a little over 6k RPM for peak power.

I now know that in 98 there was a redesign in 98 where they switched from nodular iron to 1053 forged steel. So it is forged, but the weakest alloy forged steel.

Who cares what the crank is made out of with those cast/hypereutectic pistons they use and the PM rods. LOL. The crank is the last part that is going to come apart in that motor.

1 Less thing I have to buy before it comes apart and all the goodies go in.

you can tell if its cast or forged with the motor in the car all you have to do is look at the rear crankshaft flange where it mates to the flywheel i do it all the time when i buy old cores a cast crant will have a fine casting line where it was in the casting mold and a forged will have a fat thick line about the thickness of an eraser head or more where it was forged just drop your inspection cover and peek behind the flywheel might have to rotate the motor over to get it in sight now this only applies to 2 piece rear main engines dont know what the zz4 has but in my summit racing mag it states that its forged
