396 inches can be done but you start getting close to limitations there, and rotating stuff is cheaper for the 383 I believe.

If you have the dough, they have 427+ci inch kits for the small block chevy. But that's getting into some series cash. 383 is a dime a dozen now, and you can get a forged setup for not much more than a grand.

Also once you go over a 383 you also will spend alot more money on heads. My advise is if you want displacement go with a BBC and good set of aluminum heads.

I did a 396. It's basically a 4.03 bore, 3.875" crank in a 70's 4 bolt main 350 block. Also did 6" rods and was left with a 1.07" compression height so I won't be hitting it with more than 250hp worth of spray. Nothing wrong with a 383. Building 427, 434, 454, 460+ cube SBC's is easy now also with aftermarket blocks and not so cheap cranks.

do u really want a SBC?
why not an LSx instead, like a 375 ci iron block or 400+ci one
550-600+hp easy with stock type heads and parts

i built engine for a friend over .060 6.0 l block, stock crank,=375 ci, and LS6 heads,
Trex cam, 750 dp,th400, makes about 475 to the wheels or close to 600 on motor, makes more power than sbc 383

u need some awesome heads and solid roller, to make 500-600 hp n/a
with an sbc, like some dart pro 1's or better which are like 1500-2000 $ or better
LSx L92 heads outflow most any sbc heads short of a 18* or hi prepped race 23* heads for sbc and are less than 1000$

but then again i am biased towards LSX but i build alot of SBC also
my 0.02$

377 is a 400 block with 350 crank, but not the best choice for a street/strip engine IMHO.
I'd stick 383, as I've had good luck with mine, and the shop that built mine turns out plenty of them since rotating assemblies are much more affordable than they were 6-10 years ago. Current one gets 13 mpg highway with a TH400, 3800 stall converter and 3.73 gears, and 370 rwhp. That's with a small (under .530 lift) solid cam, and I know a roller will make more 427 can be done, but IMHO once you get over 400 cubes, bigger heads are a good choice, thus more $$$, and even an aftermarket block for strength.

Good luck!

Derek

For what my $.02 is worth, I would never build a 377 or any other destroked combo unless it was for a class with a CI restriction or a lbs per CI type of rule. I actually have a 377 I started to build and will most likely continue to build but that was for a class requiring 8.5 lbs per CI and that got me close to my estimated car weight. And before someone brings up the NASCAR 350-358 inch motors, it is only because that is the rules they have to abide by. Granted they choose a short stroke combo to get it, but that is so they can run a large bore which enables them to stuff larger valves into the cylinder head and increase the head flow. I would be willing to bet if it were not for rules, they would be running the largest strokes they could get in there and making even more HP allthough it might be slightly lower in the RPM range.

Here is a combo for you for 520hp:
1)383...10:1 compression
2)195 AFR heads
3)230/236 .520 cam
4)Single plane manifold
5)750cfm carb
6)1 3/4" headers

You can build a 396 SBC no problem or even get a 400 block and make it a 406 and build up from there(just have a cooling system to match your hp levels plus the 400 blocks run hotter than 350 blocks)

The EFI route does get expensive but for the reliability and driveability....there is no substitute.

first of all in the latest hot rod magazine they built a 500 hp motor for 5 grand, so point proven...second me and other people like 377 because you can rev them up to like 9 grand safely depending on how u build them..thats why i was thinking aboout building one...and third of all nice combo..ill probably go the 383 route cause they cool better and are less expensive..
