Default Hitachi Super Torque Race Car Starter?? NEED HELP ASAP

I have one important question I recently bought a
Hitachi Super Torque Race Car Starter OSGR
2.7 kW, 12 Volt, CW, 9-Tooth Pinion
Used On:
Chevrolet Small Block or Big Block V8 Engines w/ 153-Tooth or 168-Tooth Flywheel
I recently went to test it out and check for clearance. It seems the gear in the starter gets stuck in the flywheel. When we were trying to turn it over the gear was still stuck. But later popped back out. Are gear reduction starters supposed to do this???? I'm just worried if I were to start the car up the starter gear will still be stuck on the flywheel and the flywheel will damage the starter. Any help would be greatly appreciated - Thanks
