Default anyone running factory oval port heads on a 496

the last motor i ran in my car was a 505 with 8.5:1 compression, a 258/267@.050 solid flattapet cam,a victor jr, a 1000cfm race demon, and 049 casting oval port heads that i ported. they have 2.19 and 1.88 valves and between a 280cc and 290cc intake runner. my car is a 69 nova weights 3500 with me ,i have a th400,3800 PTC converter, 9inch with 3.89 gears. the fastest i went was 6.95@97 all motor. i now have another set of pistons but it is for a 496 but will now have 10.4:1 compression. what kind of difference do yall think i should see in using the same stuff as before but now with 9 less cubes but almost 2 more points of compression?

I've seen several. All were in trucks for towing.

Compression = HP, so maybe try milling, thinnest gasket that is safe and check with some cam company to check your set up, you might be off a little on your cam. I just can't remember the % of added HP per point of compression. You will add not lose, in my opinion. Can u get bigger valves in those, free flow with same cam.

Good luck.

I think you can fit a 2.300 valve with the oval ports but its gonna be alot of porting on cast iron (sucks) to get the right cross sections to match the valve, rpm etc if done right.

i don't want to port anymore on these heads because i have already maxed them out plus i spent about 30hrs working on them . and trust me cast iron does suck. i have a new set of protopline heads ready to go i just have to buy pushrods and headstuds and an intake to use them but that equalls more money. i want to stay on pump gas so race gas is out of the question

E-85, cheaper & more compression. Just a thought, it is pump fuel.

If money is an issue, just get your stuff together and go have fun.

Just be smart & safe about it. Good luck.
