The physical size of the block itself is different...big blocks are bigger than small blocks obviously. Cubic inches is a function of bore & stroke. For instance, small block chevy's can range from 262ci all the way up to 400+ci strokers, but all will have the same external dimensions because they're all small block chevys. Same with big blocks, cubes can range from 396 all the way through 500+ because of different bore/stroke combinations, yet they're all the same size externally. Make sense?

yes, max is 510.70 for the new bad bad LSX block, I will be using one for a
Pro-Charger project in the coming future. Probably a 454"

There are now several different size blocks. Especially BBC, they have 4.84, 4.9, 5.0 plus I heard they have something bigger. You have to remember, the parts are not interchangable, so make sure you know what you have.

Yes, the LSX will be available this spring but it's not a traditional "small block chevy", it's based on the new Gen III/IV platform. It will be available in a tall deck version that will accomodate a 4.25" bore and 4.5" stroke crank which equates to 511ci!!!

dont worry man. my older brother, which is a Mustang Owner, didnt know the difference between a longblock and short block? "I dont want a long block cause it will be to longer then the shortblock." he thought that that gap between each cylinder head would be thicker therefore the block would be longer. I'll admit that i didnt know at one time but ever since i joined good ol' LS1Tech i have learned quite a bit. but we still have much to learn young grasshopa.

Maybe someone will post a pic for you of each one. Cubic inches is dependant on bore and stroke. The bore is diameter of the cylinder. The stroke is distance the piston in the bore travels up and down, which in turn is dependant on the size of the crankshaft. If you bore the block or increase the size of the crankshaft, you gain displacement. Displacement is measured in cubic inches of liters. Cubic inches X 16.39 = cubic centimeters, move the decimal left to come up with liters. A 350 is a 5.7 liter or 5700ish cc's.

A big block is physically MUCH bigger than a small block. The block, heads, intake manifold, Everything is bigger thus allowing greater displacements to be achieved.
262ci is the Smallest small block ever produced. A 400ci is the Biggest small block ever produced...By the GM that is.
396ci is the Smallest big block ever produced..By GM.
502ci is the Biggest big block ever produced....by GM.
Hope this helps. And dont get confused by the bore and stroke stuff. If you understand, good. If not, ignore it and remember the cubic inch values for the big and small blocks.
Do a search on Yahoo and find some "Big Block Chevy Pics" and some "Small Block Chevy Pics". This will show you the difference and help you understand all of this.
Good Luck.

Chevy also made a BBC around 366" I think it was a tall deck, long stroke, can't remember 100%.

Just mentioning, not causing an issue, they were rare, and some people never heard of them, mostly in trucks, bus' and equipment if I remember correctly. We had some blocks a few years ago, gave them away.

I completely forgot about the 366ci. Good call on that one. Not many people no of it, and those who do, forget about it.....OR at least try to.
