Default t56 with 454?

I am thinking about putting a t56 in my 69 camaro. The camaro has a 454 with a muncie 4sp now. Has anyone tried this? what parts do I need or is it even possible??

Check this site out. Its a 4th gen but you'll get some info on what flywheel and stuff you'll need to run the 454 T56 setup.

If your 454 is a 2-piece then you can contact Centerforce. They make a flywheel that will work. If it's a one piece for some reason like a retro fit you shouldn't have to worry.

Youll need an older T56 with the right bellhousing, one that came off an Lt1 motor is ideal, not anything Ls1 or viper.

The t56 is hydraulic, so you will need to find a master cyl, resivoir, and that braided quick disconect line, and modify the master into your firewall in a way to work with your current clutch pedal seems to be the easiest route off top my head. probaly the biggest PITA i see, i hate tight spots...

Your 4 speed "should" be setup to work with a mechanical speedometer, im not sure if any T56's were made that way... Any i have seen are eletctric with a VSS, An electric speedometer may be in pile of parts needed.

Diff Crossmember,

clutch

Not sure how the shifter will wind sitting up in your tunnel, hopefully close to original??

and lastly Trans length, i know T-5 nd t56 are close. but a 4 speed may want to play with driveshaft lengths and may be diff splines,

Thats about all i can think of right off the top of my head, some people may know the answers to some im not sure of hopefully, But it would be worth the effort from a 4 speed to 6 IMO. they can handle some steep gears no problem. 4.10's in my TA are nothing. The only downside is breaking them can be a lil costly. and big blocks obviously make some torque.

Keisler sells a retro fit kit for your T56 conversion. The shifter sits approx. 3-4 in. farther back in the tranny tunnel. You will need to also get a yoke for the T56 and have a new driveline built for it. It is not hard to complete the project but just a little bit time consuming taking your measurements. My freind and I just completed this project for his wife's 68' Camaro back in Nov.

it has 4.10 gears and all I do is drive on the road, I have no plans of racing this car. I am really thinking about trying to do this. my muncie is needing rebuilt so instead of spending money on it I may try the conversion.

Look into a tremec tko too. This will handle a lot of hp, and will be a little bit easier to convert. Still get overdrive, so you have better street manners. And it's a bit stronger than the t56. Might be about the same price or a little cheaper. I definately wouldn't overlook it.

I am pretty sure it is the m21. it works well but it pops out of gear while driving. I have not had time to try adjusting the linkage yet but I will before I buy something else. I was looking on ebay, the have a adapter plate that adapts a lt1 model t56 to an engine that had a muncie. I wonder if that would be the way to go? I already have the hydraulics for one where I updated my 99 SS.

I believe that '93 used a mechanical speedo... try getting a t56 from a 93 f-body.

t-5's are tilted 17deg. would need a new bellhousing for it to sit in straight, and they're JUNK. Even the w/c t-5's are junk. They can't hold up to a stock 305. t5 were rated for 250 ftlbs and w/c were for about 300ftlbs. I would look into a tremec tko 5spd. Easy clean install will hold the power you got. A 6spd wouldn't be bad, you would need a t-56 out of a 94-97 fbody. I wouldn't go with one from a 93. They were a little bit weaker for some reason. They worked the bugs out in 94 though. t-56's use electric speedo's but there is kits to convert them to mechanical. Just a little pricey. I would look into threads at www.thirdgen.org lot of good info there from people swapping in t56's and tremecs. I'm not sure what clutch you need for the "retro" t-56. 93-97 used a pull style clutch, but i think a clutch from the v8 t-5s will work. Just search in thirdgen.org, you'll find what your looking for.
