BBC 2 bolt main strengths
we all know the big debate with this over smallblocks.. but i was curious since most big blocks {that ive come across} have 2 bolt mains, has anyone been putting down big numbers with just a studed 2 bolt setup??

Its been done plenty of times
Actually there is one builduup in how to buill bbc's which I think was tickling 1200hp on a 400shot.

.
I have seen one case of a guy running 1500 HP on a blown Alcohol drag motor.
He had a buzzard car that he threw in the motor. He learned when it starting tearing apart.
He claims it was a 2 bolt block and cast crank, so who knows.
I know I have 3 motors 1000+ HP and all three are 4 bolt and 2 are splayed billet caps.
Is it possible yes, should u, NO. It's not very intelligent to spend all that money,
knowing for a few more bucks, u can get new caps, block drilled and line bored.
U get much more strength, and piece of mind. My personal stuff will always be 4 bolt mains and always be 6 studs per hole. It's 2007, there's no reason not to do it correctly.
If u can afford an engine and car for that much power, do it smart.
Any flex will eventually be bad, it might make 1000 pass' and I hope it does, but why risk it.
1000+ HP is not a toy. Good luck.

I went studed 2 bolt shooting for 1000 at the crank with n20. if i can get it i get it. if she comes apart ill just build another and maybe build stronger.. . guess theres 2 ways to look at it. i can get 454 blocks all day for cheap. compared to spending a chunk of change on a dart block. $ does usualy mean = more and guarnteed speed but more $ involved = bigger heartbreak when something goes bad. just my veiw,

Im only gona be pushing around 750 to the tires with my 468 and im having the caps splayed. Its cheap insurance regardless of what ever the motor combo is, full tilt or stock it cant hurt regardless.

From what my friend/engine builder tells me, a good BBC with 2 bolt mains are good for 900 hp +/- , and hasnt had any problems with the ones he builds.. Although Im sure alot depends on how meticoulous the builder is when assembling..

Cause you know once you get used to the power, we'll be thinking about a nitrous shot or something and those two bolt caps will be heavy on your mind.

2-Bolt Main Big Blocks
I've heard 2-Bolt Big Blocks are good to 700 HP if you use main cap studs. I build all of my big blocks with ARP main studs now but my first big block was built using the stock GM bolts which held up just fine. It was a 2 Bolt 396 with 12.5:1 cr, open chamber, rectangle port heads, GM ZL-1 cam, Edelbrock intake and an 850 Holley carb. I regularly shifted it at 7500 RPM while racing with no issues and during one top end run, I spun it to 8300 RPM in 4th gear (M-22 4 speed) in my '64 Chevelle with 3.07 gears and 28" tall tires. The only problem I ever had with the car was occasionally throwing a fan belt at high RPM. Well, I broke a couple rear ends and one transmission but the engine held up through it all. Although I prefer 4 bolt blocks, I don't shy away from two bolt big blocks either. My last 2 bolt big block ran to 7500 RPM with a 250 shot of nitrous at the dragstrip with no problems. Pretty sure it was making more than 700 hp on the nitrous. I use ARP bolts and studs throughout all of my engines now and never have failures.
