What is a reasonable price(machine work)

I am about to pick up a 400 block from a guy on here and am trying to figure around what I should expect to pay for the machine work. The block doesn't need anything but I need my crank turned and to have the crank installed, I can do everything else. Obviously though I cant turn the crank and I would just feel better about them installing it. So what should I expect to pay for just that? Thanks in advance.

I had the journals on a stock LS1 crank turned, it's been a few years. He charged $140 bucks to do that. I am not for sure about installing the crank. When I did my 402 a few months back I had him install the whole bottom end so it would be internally balanced. Hope that helps some.

Well, MY machine shop charges around 225 for a full block work over(not that you say you needed it) and 65 for a crank turn. I install all my own **** so i am sorry i cannot help you with that price.

thats pretty cheap really. The local shops that hold a good reputation around here charge around 200 to turn a crank. about 50 bucks per hole for a bore/hone.

^^^^ HOLY ****, it is like 10-12 bucks a hole here, at a few shops. I know a guy that turns cranks for 85 because he sends them out!!! Wow, i would not build engines for that price.

I dont know, that seems rediculously cheap to me LOL

thats about as low as it gets around here. GOOD machine shops are few and far between. Their is only one place i would trust, he just built the 620hp BBC in the Malibu and the thing is the *****, but expensive. It just seems normal to me.

Prices for machine work vary drastically depending on where you live. Around here, grinding a crank is only ~100 bux, and boring/honing is only $20/hole. SBC cranks/rods are so cheap, it's smarter to just buy new most of the time rather than recondition old parts.
