boat motor into a chevy? i am kind of in a debate and was wondering if anyone could give me some insight. i have a mercruiser 454 in my boat and i also have a 396 gettin ready to put in my car. seen as how i will drive the car more i wanted to put the 454 in it and put the 396 in the boat. can this be done or is something wrong with the 454 being a marine motor? thanks for the help guys

Everything should switch over. Cam, heads, intakes, ignition, etc............LIke the above post, I believe it is reversed rotation.

Is the motor a salt water or fresh water mill? I remember reading somewhere that if it's a salt water, you may want to have a machine shop go through it to check it for any damage.

It'll work, I know a guy that gets 454's and 502's out of boats all the time, warranty engines.
If they are reverse rotation you just have to change the cam and timing set. You're only going to be able to use the long block anyway.
They are not thicker, in fact most have the same block casting number as the car and truck big blocks. Every one I've seen had regular compression, between 8:1 and 9.5:1. All flat top pistons, just different head chamber volume.

my friend have a marine engine its 496 ci
it works fine with him he just changed the pistons cuz usually marine engines has a high C.R his c.s now is around 8 something with twin thumber y2k turbos .
i will upload some nice pics of his setup .

Yes, a lot of boat motors are reverse rotation, meaning exactly what is says: Spins the other way. Instead of teh flywheel spinning in a CW motion, it spins CCW. Therefore, it won't work with the transmission that is in your car now.

Just turn it around. Engine and tranny in back. Axle in front. Obviously a jest but it would be funny.

It usually doesn't matter because they have a heat exchanger that the water runs through to cool the engine coolant. So the engine never sees river or ocean water. The engine will usually have antifreeze running through it in a closed circuit to the heat exchanger. The other side of the heat exchanger does use outside water for heat transfer but the two liquids never mix.
