Default 355 sbc build for 92 Iroc.

Brother wants to rebuild a 350 to a 355 (.030 over bore.) His goal is around 400-450 rwhp. I need to try and help him put this thing together but have no idea for a top end package. We would like to keep the cam hydraulic and we will be running a carburated setup. Also, he is on a budget but he will get what he needs. I need help on the cam, style and manufacturer. As well as the intake setup. Dual or single plane. The car is a weekend toy not a DD and will see little track time mostly toying around on the street. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks for the help in advance.

Do you have a cowl hood? Do you want cast iron heads or aluminum (budget $$)? What carb are you going to run? Do you want to keep this build on pump gas?

Will be getting a cowl hood. Aluminum heads and carb will depend on the rest of the package. Pump gas 93.

To get the HP goals that he is wanting he is going to need to go with a custom hyd roller cam and a excellent cylinder head combo. I would run a set of the AFR 195cc Eliminator heads with a Brodix HV1016 intake manifold. This intake is a dual plane manifold that will make better TQ than say a Victor Jr., more than likely you will also have better top end HP numbers as well. I would use the Mahle Power Pack forged piston & rings kit. I would also use a Cometic MLS head gasket that is 4.060" x 0.040" compressed thickness. Scat makes a very nice inexpensive I-beam connecting rod set that uses the 7/16" cap screws & are rated to hold 700 HP @ 7500 rpm (part # 2-ICR6000-7/16). The stock crankshaft will hold the HP of this engine build if it is properly preped, make sure to have a nice radius put onto you rod & main journels (if the crank is standard it will end up at .020" undersized, BUT YOU HAVE TO LET THE CRANK GRINDER KNOW THAT YOU WANT AS CLOSE TO A .125" RADIUS ON THE CRANK AS YOU CAN GET). The custom ground cam is more than likely going to be around a 108 LSA for maximum HP, which will probably need a vaccum brake booster reserve can. Lastly you will need to have the engine decked with you other machine work, I would have them set this with the piston's sitting out of the deck by .005". With the above components mentioned you will be at 11.07:1 compression with a 60cc cylinder head.

Thank you. What cam specs do you think will will wind up needing roughly. I know it will have to be custom speced but if you had to guess. Thanks again.

I am useing Erson Cams lobe profiles, as this is where I get my cams. Here is what I think will work very well for you:

Advertised Duration 278*/286*
@ .050" Duration 238*/246*
lift w/1.6 ratio rockers .592"/.592"
LSA 108* + 3* (ICL 105*)

To run this car w/out a vaccum canister:

Advertised Duration 278*/286*
@ .050" Duration 238*/246*
lift w/1.6 ratio rockers .592"/.592"
LSA 111* + 5* (ICL 106*)

Not a problem, anytime! Tony Mamo a AFR is also a very helpfull guy to either PM or call & talk to about the heads (Street port or Competition port). He also likes to build motors, so I would send him a link to this thread & see what he thinks.

You really think that cam will do it? I was thinking around 248/252@ .050 with a 110 with about the same lift. Just wondering.

Yep, I sure do. His peak HP will be around 6600-6800 rpm with the cam I came up with. This should put his shift point at 7100-7300 rpm. He will also have a much better TQ curve to go with it. Peak HP is not always king of the track, just king of the dyno. If he was willing to run race fuel and had more compression, then I would be more inclined to say you were on track with the cam duration figure's.

Proly is a Z28. The car is 500 miles away. The stock motor is a 305 and he was given a 4 bolt main 350 and wants to build this 355 so I am going to try and help him piece this together. Let me know what you are looking for on your used parts.

How about a 383 stroker kit? They don't cost much more than a 355 build up.
