Default What's Birmingham AL like?

I'm from the Chicago area and my job is offering to transfer me to Birmingham. I've never been there but the thought of a warmer climate is very appealing. What's the area like and is there car stuff to do there? What areas are good to be in, etc. Any info would be appreciated.

Bham is the largest city in the state. Kind of getting old. It's roots are in the iron ore, steel industry. Definately warmer, rarely any snow, and if it does the town shuts down, no plows. We have weekly cruise-ins on different parts of town from April thru October. Stop by our local board and say hello, link in sig. BTW, who are you working for?

I work for Quebecor World. I guess they are expanding a production department down there. So is the city clean/dirty? Lots of stuff to do?

I've lived/worked in several areas and the North/Central Alabama area is DAMN hard to beat. Bham is like most other larger cities, it has it's bad parts and its VERY nice parts. Take a 4 or 5 day trip down one week and check the area out.

What wayne and gomer said is true. B-ham beats the hell outta Montgomery, which is gay. B-ham is nice I like it up there, northern alabama isn't too bad, but don't go much farther south then B-ham.

Being not too far away from florida is a nice thing as well. There are some things to do as far as F-body wise, but seems there are some dry spots as far as activity. Guess I'm just use to the busy crazyness from my home group. Anyways they are all nice guys and will help you out if they can.

If Montgomery is so bad then perhaps you should move!
The south side of Birmingham is just 1 hour from Downtown Montgomery.

I lived in Hoover Al. for almost 18 years(4 of those in Tusc. ROLL TIDE) It is what I would call a small city with large asperations. The largest interstate is 3 lanes wide(in a few area's 4) compared to the ATL. and I am sure Chicago with 7-8 lanes per side traffic will seem like childs play. A lot of amintites are there, but minus any pro sports teams, a great college football/basketball city. Compaired to Atlanta the pace is laid back and the people are as good as it gets. From my younger days the should be plenty of oppertunities to hook up with an F body contengent and plenty of "street racing" type of oppertunities. I still have family there and dont mind the 2 hour drive from Atlanta at all. You could definetly find a lot of worse places to be transfered to.

Yeah, Montgomery is pretty lame. Birmingham is nicer, but a faster pace. If I were you, I'd move to one of the suburbs on the southern side of the city. Hoover, Helena, Chelsea, and Indian Springs are all nice. I have relatives in all of these places.

I'm gonna move to Hoover in a couple of years... Just need to get school handled first.

We love it here too, just no competition. Damn ricers...

Hey, B'ham people, how do you all feel about Racetech? I need a tune, and am looking at my options.

Tuscaloosa is about an hour to an hour and a half away from Bham and when the need arises to go party at one of the top rated party colleges in the country, University of Alabama, its not too far to drive. Bham even has a semi-street oriented web site that you can get on to check local happenings also, www.bhamracing.com , and you have to become a member to actually get on most of the site. The weather gets damn hot after the 4th of july so be prepared for that. I welcome you here in advance

No I wont be entering my car. Engine no where near ready for that, no FRCs, STB and nothing polished. I need to get on it though, I will be in the G9 f-body gathering and the Super Chevy Show.

If I move there I will be working at Southern Progress. I guess it's really nice. Anyone know more about that place? I'll find out more about the job specifics and if they're gonna send me there to check it out on Tuesday
I'm excited, stressed, and nervous all at the same time
