Question Rear U Joint ?

If I broke this today while leaving a stop light pretty hard, how would I know it?

Car made a loud POP back there, I heard a pinging of some sort on the pavement and then it started vibrating under medium acceleration. Car still moves but somethings weird. I looked under the car and didn't see anything broken but haven't been able to get UNDER the car for a look. Does this sound like a U joint or strap holding it to the yoke broke off?

LMFAO!!!! If you don't see anything yet keep driving it and I bet you will shortly!
When that happened to mine it didn't take long for the rear to go and then it took the tranny with it!

If the straps are still bolted to the joint, and there is no visual damage, my guess is a broken ring gear tooth.

Jack up the rear end under the diff. Put it in neutral and spin the wheels by hand. If it's a broken gear, you'll hear it or feel it when the missing tooth/teeth make contact with the pinion gear-

Better yet.... pull the cover and have a look. You needed to change the fluid anyway

When I broke my U joint.....My D/S feel out of the rear yolk about a couple of feet after it snapped. Thank god for the Spohn T/A with the D/S loop, that could have been ugly.....

When I broke a tooth on my ring gear it just made a pop, and then was always making a clunking noise. It didnt really have a bad vibration- just more noise

Okay, did all your suggestions. No noise or feeling spinning the wheels. DS is in the yoke but I see no straps on the joint. Is that possible?

Yeah it's possible. Prolly not enough DS end play between the rear yoke and trans for it to come out. Sometimes it's a tight fit until you unload the rear suspension.

You got lucky.

Put new straps on it a have a nice day-

the joint is pressed in the d/s. There is no strap on the joint at the d/s- just some clips keeping the caps from coming off. At the yolk there is a strap on each side of the u-joint cap holding it to the yolk. Is both straps/caps and the bolts still in place?

I see no straps at all. Caps are in place...maybe I thru a a DS weight?...I have no clue what to think at this point. Taking it to a shop...is the only option for this "village idiot".

Thanks guyz!

I don't see dick for straps. just took it for a ride and maybe something else is broken. Sucker vibrates/and BUZZES back there in 1st gear under lite acceleration. Never got out of 1st turned around, put it in the garage.

where you live at? Is this your DD or weekend car? I may be able to stop by and take a look at it and see what we can come up with.
