Possbile move to NC
Possbile move to NC Can anyone here chime in on the Fayetteville area (Cumberland Co.) and Statesville (Iredell Co.). I am applying for a couple of State jobs up there (transferring from FL) and just in case they ask me if I want it, I would like to know a little about it. I only have a week to apply so I need to get this rolling ASAP.
A couple of things we are looking for.
good school system
housing affordability (expensive here)
taxes and homeowners insurance (also damn expensive)
Diversity?

school system in nc is terrible. i don't think anyone will argue that, although some areas are better than others.
housing is very affordable in all ranges in both those areas, taxes and homeowners are fairly reasonable outside of mecklenburg county.
diversity, both areas are put together by people from other places. i don't think i've met 50 people in 17 years that actually grew up from here, and since fayetteville has the army base there, i'm sure it would be the same.

Statesville isn't bad. Fayettnam, as I refer to it, is a pretty crappy city. I wouldn't want to live there....just dirty and not much to offer anyone who isn't military. Statesville is nice though, not too exciting, but a cleaner city. School systems are not THAT bad, just differs from one place to the next. Just thought i'd offer up my 2 cents, lol.

Well some districts are better than others far as the schools. I hear Iredell and Concord schools are better than Mecklenburg. Housing isn't too bad. I'm building a 2800 sq foot house in a devolopment for 255,000 upgraded everything in the damn thing. Mecklenburg taxes suck so look to the surrounding areas that are cheaper. Not far away at all. As Matt said some districts are better then others, but from what I hear Statesville/Iredell have better schools then most. As far as night life...you wouldnt' catch me near Statesville, there aint much. (This coming from a 26 year old). Houses and insurance, yeah there alot cheaper and people do say Mecklenburg is bad, but Coming from NJ...it's like I'm paying nothing.

In my honest opinion, I live in Rowan Co. just next to Iredell Co., Iredell would be your best bet. Mooresville and the surrounding areas are not bad. Better than Fayetnam in my opinion. Southern Iredell Co. at that. There you would be next to Huntersville, Cornelius, and Davidson which are decent communities

i lived in Mooresville, which is just south of Statesville. its a good area to live in, plenty to do, and the cost of living is alot less expensive than in Charlotte, a bunch of people commute from that area into Charlotte. the only thing i didn't like about it is that traffic was terrible!
