Default Auto Vs Manual

There are always big discussions on this. i just want to get everybodys inputs on it on this board. which is faster. Manual or Auto. I personally love to drivemy M6 everywhere and wouldn't want it to be an auto. I like have control. But my buddy has a z28 and swears up and down that his auto is faster and he loves driving an automatic. What do you think about the big argument of auto vs Manual.

Let me put in perspective for you while not going into too much detail

Auto-for drag racing, lower hp #s at the wheels due to parasitic loss but more consistent.

6 speed- more fun, less consistent without a good driver, higher hp #s at the wheels due to less parasitic loss

Usually an auto car will win a race because the car is easier to launch. With a good driver though that statement can change

in my opinion, if you're planning on drag racing it a lot without a doubt automatic is the way to go... a 6 speed is way more fun to drive on the street.
when deciding between the 2 you should first decide what you want to do with the car.

driving a 6 speed at the drag strip CAN be very frustrating, but i've had so much fun driving mine on the street over the last 5 years that i've had the car, that it more than makes up for it. personally i prefer a street car.

I agree on the good driver. Caddo has seen alot of us M6 guys run consistent all day long at our local track. Me personally, I prefer the challenge the M6 offers to maintain consistency. I'll put my M6 against an auto with equal mods any day.

I love these discussions. Stock there is ZERO comparison, M6 with a good driver wins by a bunch. Add a convert. to the auto and add a good clutch and gears to the same m6 and you are about even. From this point on the two will run about the same up to mid 11's and after that it turns into a beating for the m6ers but then the A4's start killing transmissions. The m6 is very stong and will live for a long time as long as you have a good clutch setup and you know how to drive it. I've beat up on a ton of a4 cars mod for mod but now I getting to the point where the m6 is getting very hard on the driveline. My m6 is as consistant as any a4 car. Some good suspension parts and a good shiftlight will work wonders for consistancy (and a ton of practice)

Automatic for daily driving
Manual for a weekend cruiser

My SS is an auto and I kind of regret not getting an M6 car because I dont drive it everyday. The stall did wonders though

Cainsw was who came to mind when I read the part about an M6 with a good driver, he is one of the few that I know that can run very consistant. I'm not saying there are not more guys out there that can not run consistant numbers in a M6 car, but I sure think there are more A4's running consistant numbers in the 1/4 mile. Hey I drove a manual up til my 2002 SS vert and it an A4, guess I'm getting old & lazy.

I tend to be on the other end of the spectrum....I've had both and my stalled A4 is much more fun to me as a daily driver. And it's plenty fast for me. I've never raced an equally modded 6-speed, but I've watched several at Memphis that actually had more mods than me (rear-end, drag wheels) and ran slower. Not saying that's the norm, but I'm very pleased with my auto and wouldn't change a thing.

well no stall i have seen an auto with just cat back exhaust and shorty headers and a B&M quick shift run an 11.4 at center ville and then after him was a bone stock m6 z28 i think 98 ran and 11.25. so yes i think as well if you know how to launch in an manual your well off. granted it is easier to launch with an auto pretty much no room for mistake. but in the end i love drivin my m6 every where. even stop and go traffic can get annoying it does make up for it.

11.4 is slow for those mods. I went 11.0 with Headers only on my A4 02 Z28. With the converter, nittos, and headers I went 10.4.

I can sum it up for you!
700rwhp with the auto=10.70's
900rwhp with the 6 speed=10.70's and I was pissed getting it to do that.
I am not a good 6 speed driver, but these times were with the stock 10 bolt as well! Now with 900rwhp and the glide 9.0's at 156mph!

I'm not going to lie, I like rowing gears and I miss having a stick car and, and I still want one. I like my car though for the fact that it can and will run low 12s w/ ease- on stock suspension and drivetrain minus the Yank converter.

That was a waste of time and money on that shorty headers.

Although I was taking it easy on the launch with the 10 bolt, I could not believe how hard it was for me to get that 10sec slip rowing gears. It was so much faster on the street, but a pig at the track!

so in turn the 6 speed was faster on the street? is what you are saying hunter. and yes i do agree shorty headers were a waste of time but he swears up and down that long tube headers on give us maybe 5 more horse. HAHAH i laugh at him everytime he says that. but hey he is happy with his car and i guess that is all that counts. HAHA except when i pass him on the highway.

Back in 2000, myself and my friend, known as "Pops" had identical Camaro SS's, both were black and both were of the year 2000. We had bone stock, with street tires, setups and we both put your question to the test. We lined up at No Problem Raceway and raced each other. We both launched at the same time and were side by side. When I switched to 3rd gear, I pulled him a nosecap. My time was a 12.909 and his was a 12.928. Like the rest of the fellas previously, if you're a standard driver, not someone that "can drive a standard", stick to your M6. Otherwise, get an automatic and let it work for you. Me, personally, i'll never let go of my T56.
