97 camaro ss exhaust
#21
My '97 SS has duals with resonators directly behind the dual tips... no pics right now tho. I'll see if I can get one tomorrow.
The SS window sticker calls it a "Optional Performance Exhaust System".

My Sebring '97 had the 2OTL cat-back and it performed quite well with it. It wasn't a big head turner as people didn't really like the look of two pipes on one side but I kept the system all the way up until I wen't FI on that car with no complaints. With the LT's and ORY it sounded perfect IMO!

Hey guys just an FYI but the SOTL for `98's was a GM Factory Catback std on SS and WS6's (NOT SLP)
Also seen my share of Factory `97 SS and WS6's with the SLP Powerflo Dual Dual exhaust. So it was not limited to LT4 SS's.

Base LT1 SS exhaust for 1997 was the TOTL (305hp)
Upgrade LT1 SS exhaust for 1997 was the Dual-Dual (310hp)
Base (only exhaust) LT4 SS exhaust for 1997 was the Dual-Dual (330hp)
The only reference I have seen where the SS may have some connection to the base z28 exhaust (dual rectangular tips) was in the SLP bulletin dated July 16(?) 1996, other than that, I have never seen an SS with this Z28 exhaust. If I am wrong, please show me with data.

The TOTL was never the standard exhaust unless they started that late in the 97 model year. All through 96 and up into 97 the standard exhaust was the GM exhaust not the TOTL. This was true for all SLP cars. Reason why you had a 305 and 310hp SS. I saw them new on the lot like this and yes they were real SS cars from GM/SLP.

Here is a pic of a 30th anniversary SS with stock exhaust. I found this for sale on corvettesandclassics.net. From what I have read most of the Anniversary Editions have the upgraded SLP exhaust which make the stock exhaust equipped cars very rare. Of the 957 1997 30th Anniversary SS cars, 871 had the optional SLP exhaust. (i found that last bit of info on camaros.net.

Sorry friend but that's incorrect.
96-97 SS without the exhaust option (300hp car) came with the standard Z28 muffler and dual rectangle tips
96-97 SS with the SLP optional exhaust (310hp car) came with the only catback SLP made at the time, the Two on the left.
**Note some 97s came with a silencer cone in the muffler connection to quiet down the SLP TOTL.
98 SS with the optional SLP exhaust came with the Two on the left system only they changed it to only be ONE pipe coming off the left side of the muffler and exiting out the left rear of the bumper. It had a ricer looking coffee can tip.
The SLP dual dual did not become an option on the SS or Firehawk until 1999. It was a regular style cross flow muffler with dual tips on either side.

I've never seen 1OTL on a '97, only on a '98, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist on a late production '97 SS, that's just my 2 cents.
Here's a video I took of my friend Dee's 2OTL on his '96 SS. He has a K&N airfilter, but I don't think any other mods. While the car is running it sounds fairly similar to a regular LT1 Z28 exhaust with a bit more of a low tone rumble. When revved, it sounds similar to thunder clapping/crashing. Sounds nice.
Do you have a video of your car starting up and then revving? I would really like to hear that if so. I've been looking for a video of that for a long time without a bit of luck. SLP or Motorweek or somebody did a video of an SS with that exhaust, but never a start up and rev, just peeling out with lots of tire noise -__-.
As far as I can tell, somebody put the V6 exhaust on your car for some reason. That isn't normal at all.

So there is no way the SLP Loudmouth that was on my 80K mile 97 SS (#2438) is the original exhaust? The SLP door tag shows the performance exhaust option. Seems odd that the original owner would pay extra for the optional SLP exhaust only to swap it out for another SLP exhaust. If the Loudmouth is not original, then how would I know if mine came with the 2OTL or the Dual / Crossflow style with the Resonators like in the pics above? (that looks awesome btw)

I think you would have to find out the date SLP stopped putting the TOTL on the Camaro and then find your build date. I know it happened about half way through the 1997 build year. You could also give SLP a call to see what they say.

Resonators
Note the SLP Dual - Dual performance exhaust Very Rare for 1997 1/2. The SLP tail pipes with resonators were developed for the 1997 1/2 Camaro SS program. These would have been installed on the SS Camaro's equipped with SLP's Powerflo exhaust for that year. I have a set new and unused in the SLP box, I will conceder selling them PM me. Here is what they look like:

I've seen the dual-dual on quite a few '97 SS's. Obviously Xsta Z 28's LT4 HMS SS, but also I know a friend who has it on his HMS LT1 SS, and I've seen it on quite a few regular LT1 SS's, but I can't vouch for the originality of those cars.

Funny...I've thought about adding something similar to my SS using Dynomax bullets (I guess?) to quiet mine down a little more.
